I believe what you are refering to is (bridging) in a storage silo or bin which creates a tightly stuck together mass of material by compaction and the loose material under it falls away from the compacted surface layer due to gravity ■

Cohesive arching as described above or it could be mechanical arching in which lumps are mechanically interlocked and form a stable arch, if the hopper outlet is too small ■
