Smaller Screeners
Tony: How small would you like?
YES, there are very small screeners for topsoil. But, the nature of screening dirt or topsoil......is that the material is hard to screen so you kinda need something around the 4x8 size range.
If you wanted to get really small, there are people who make these things 18"x 4' long, 2'x4', 3'x6' on small skid frame setups. ■
Re: Small Screener
Hi
Thanks for getting back to me George.
What i was thinking would be a screen say 500mm x 500mm.
I was toying with the idea of making one but i don't know how effective it would be ?
I have a guy who can sell me the electric vibrating motor, but i really just want to know how effective a small machine is.
Being a novice i have no idea how effective something that size is.
I have seen the large screeners at the local quarry's and always thought what a good idea it would be to have one myself when taking out soil for a landscaping project only to bring back soil later on once the project has been completed.
Basically i am thinking of a screen that you can use with a mini excavator.
Any advice would be great.
Who know's i might even start making them as i have some fantastic ideas ■
Small Excavator Attachment
There are many mini screeners in the market. Tow behind style, lightweight, which will scalp stones, screen, and separate different sizes.
These units process topsoil, gravel, stone, concrete, dirt, sand, compost, mulch and other bulk materials.
here is one concept, there are very small trommels (rotating drums) also. If you can find used, you could buy economically.

Re: Small Screener
Thanks for that george
I live in the UK ant these types of screen don't exist.
We only have the large quarry screeners.
I have a design worked out and i can get the motor etc.
The motor i was looking at is a 3000 rpm motor would this be ok for screening soil and compost ?
I am looking to build a 2ft x 2ft screener but if this works i might build a 4ft x 4ft.
Basically all i need to know about is the motor, from what i read you need more RPM for soil, compost etc and less rpm for rock and bulk material.
Any advice would be greatfull
I think i seen a small screener on the web a year or two i think it was called a multi screen ?
What are they like and would that be better than building one ?
Like i said i am in the UK so its not easy buying stuff you need. ■
Small Screener
small equipments are still in use in India by small contractors.
Please have a look at following web-site: http://www.sayaji.com/html/siproduc...projects.html I have no connection with the company and do not represent them. ■
Re: Small Screener
TheTool
Building vibrating screen could be an unpleasant project if you don't know how to do it - scaling the screener won't work and when you work with vibrations the stresses are not linear. Make the frame very rigid and built the size you want instead of going into something intermediate. ■
Re: Small Screener
Building Your Own Screen?
TONY: I would strongly recommend NOT on building your own screen....MANY people make their own, not many work from my experience.
Buy a very small unit new or used would do quite nicely.
Yes, you need more action for SOIL ■
More To Follow Here,
Sorry, i hit the wrong key and got cut off on my last post....
For topsoil and compost, you need more ACTION or stroke to handle this non free flowing material. Most folks do this on a conveyor hung screen setup loading into a feed hopper with a grizzly bar on it.....stopping big rocks from entering. Basically, scalping the stones off then screening the black dirt out at minus 1/2" to 3/8" product size.
NOTE: if you do not have BIG STROKE or action then, conversely you need GRAVITY to help move the material.....like a steep angle on the screen box.
Trommels are also commonly used on same, to physically move the material round the drum to accomplish the same thing. Trommels are typically more maintenance intensive...but, do an excellent job.

I May Offer You The Smallest Unit
Dear Tony,
Kroosh Technologies developed a multi-frequency vibrating screen that can handle the most difficult to screen materials using a small screening area.
Since you would like to use a portable unit I would suggest you take a look at the following link:
http://kroosher.googlepages.com
or at our company's website:
http://www.kroosh.com
Our equipment is small, yet very powerful, due to the innovative vibration system installed in it.
It is very easy to operate and low energy consuming.
The smallest unit is a round 650mm diameter unit. You can see pictures and general drawings at the first link, by pressing on "The SXE" link and "general dimension" link.
Best Regards, ■
Re: Small Screener
Thanks for that info george, i did fancy buying one of those Multiscreen 2000's but i cannot find a website for them and i think they only supply in the USA.
What i think i might do is have a word on my friend and see if he can make me one from ALU.
I have a design and also can get all the parts its just a case of putting it together.
I know you said not to build one but i am quite technically minded and something like this looks very easy to do.
In the UK we don't have anything like these so the smallest ones are about $12.000
What i want to do is maybe develop a range of small garden screeners from $300 to $4000.
I think there is a market for them in the UK.
What is the multiscrrener like did it work well and why is there not info on them ? ■
Multi Screener
Tony: I have never heard of them either....sorry. ■
Re: Small Screener
This is the multiscreen 2000
http://www.edbydesign.com/books/B000273GR0.html
its about the size i was looking for you basically put a wheel barrow under it and shovel onto it. ■
The Garden Topsoil Screener
tony: that is a groovy little screener.......no wonder I knew nothing about it.
Thanks for the link.......EXCELLENT. ■
Re: Small Screener
George thats sort of what i want to build but i have a few different ideas than that one.
The one i want to make will be a bit stronger than that one and made from alu so its light.
The Multiscreener uses a shaft i will be using a sealed motor meaning less maintenance.
I am actually thinking of going even smaller than that one.
Maybe one that sits on top of a bucket.
will build one first and reseach it first, i can get some fantastic motors of all sizes. ■

Re: Small Screener
Well i have got the frame work all done now for my screener this is going to be a prototype the finished screener will probably be bigger.
We have made it out of aluminum to save weight and also to save on rust etc.
I will post a few picks once i have it built just to show you what it looks like.
Thanks for the advice everyone and fingers crossed it works. ■
Congratulations
Tony,
You are the first gardener, that attracted so many screeners producers and comments for only wanting to produce a small and cheap soil screen.
Sometimes it is nice to use the internet, even if we are wasting our time...
Best Regards, ■
Re: Small Screener
I hope i have not wasted anyones time, it just i would rather ask experts about it that a sales man.
I would like to thank everyone for posting and helping me its always nice to learn from the right people.
Cheers

Re: Small Screener
Hi all
Well got the screener up and running, the only problem i am having is the discharge shoot i have seems to be vibrating a lot making the thing very noisy.
Anyone know the best design to discharge the over size ?
I sort of figured that the discharge needs to have a thicker grade metal to stop the vibration is this right ?
Regards
Tony ■

Re: Small Screener
Hi Tony
check out www.omhproscreen.com
They are lightweight and portable but very cost effective and user friendly.
They have units going into Australia and from there hoping to go into England, etc. ■
Discharge Overs Chute
Thicker would definitely help, also you might try laying some rubber overlay....quietens the material sounds also.

Re: Small Screener
That omhproscreen link doesn't work for me. I would be interested to see the product, however. ■
Hey Peter Doneker
Hello Peter,
Hopefully this will work this time for you. I tried to get to your site also to contact you and couldn't get to your site either. I contacted our dealer in Australia. His name is Craig Wills and he is in Sydney. He will be doing a show in Sydney the end of May and you could see the products there.

Re: Small Screener
If you could send me some photos I would have a better idea of your design kev00083@hotmail.co.uk. But for a reduction you could use a rubber (an old conveyer belt cut up). I am currently considering constructing my own screener. ■
