Conveyor Pulley Bearing Maintenance

Posted in: , on 29. Aug. 2012 - 10:36

Conveyor pulleys bearings are running under heavy loads especially drive, tail, take up and bend pulleys. In case bearing grease is contaminated with dust. Can we flush it in running condition with higher viscosity oil injection in bearing from its greasing nipple, it will clean the contaminated grease and once the cleaning process is over again applying fresh grease for normal operation.

Namaskar Vipul,

first:

Be sure to use rags to wipe off the grease gun and the grease fittings on the pillow blocks or better yet

run grease hoses from the pillow blocks to a common point using a mounting block to centralise the

greasing for your drive units if you have room. if you have a access to a machine shop a machinist can

make these fitting blocks for you easily and then you can bolt them in a convenient location to permit greasing

from one spot rather than crawling under the belts head pulley or snubber pullys to grease the opposite side of

the drive units.

Second:

Just keep using clean grease for the pillow block bearings do not use oil in any

cicumstance as the the oil will leak out through the grease seals and create a

greater fire hazard for your belt flights.

Oil Flushing

IMO this is a no go, and one should better replace the bearing block completely in order to do proper maintenance. This is as fast as "flushing" & much more considerate.

See: There might already be damages to the bearing rollers, and where do you want to flush through? If the seals are worth the word, they'll keep!

However, as the bearing grease will be surely be a + additives, you will lose all warranty by doing it your way + allow me the question: Did you by all means consider to open the cover on one side in order to flush a bit faster / more efficient???

In any way, + seen the fire hazard + seen the danger to the people on the spot, this i'd consider dangerous malpractice, DONT.

End Disc Failure

One of the most prevalent pulley failure modes is end disc failure. End disc failure normally occurs through cyclic fatigue failure of the weld between the hub and the end disc in welded-in hub designs. This failure initiates within the heat-affected zone generated during welding. The heat-affected zone is an area within the base metal that has its mechanical properties or micro structure altered by the heat of the weld itself. The properties are altered such that these zones become the weak link within the pulley and subject to fatigue failure through pulley operation.Industrial Rubber Conveyor Belts find use in a wide range of applications in various industries.

please make it clear if it is grease or oil while the bearings is bought.
