New Shiploader from ThyssenKrupp Fördertechnik for KTG Hamburg

In 2007, the Kali-Transportgesellschaft (KTG), Hamburg awarded the contract for supply and commissioning of a new shiploader to ThyssenKrupp Fördertechnik (TKF) to increase the handling capacity at the „Potash Quay“ terminal in the port of Hamburg.

KTG is a member of the K+S group, a producer of special and standard fertilizers and active in the field of plant care and fertilizer salt products, worldwide.

The maximum handling capacity of the bulk material loader is 2000 m/h. The machine is also suited for loading trucks and rail wagons, however with a reduced material flow rate.

The design of the machine had to be adapted to the existing infrastructure of the potash loading terminal, providing for sufficient clearance below the machine portal for railway and truck traffic. The shiploader, running on rails, can position the loading device in the ship’s loading hatches by means of slewing. The shiploader’s design allows adaptation to the ship types to be loaded and to the ship’s draught, which can change depending upon the respective loading condition.

Feeding potash to the shiploader is by means of two conveyors, elevated at different height levels on the quay or by means of a so-called belt tripper car. Two intermediate conveyors transport the potash to the central chute of the shiploader, where it is discharged onto the boom conveyor. At the discharge point, the boom, which can be lifted and lowered, is equipped with a height-adjustable cascade chute and a trimming spoon. The cascade chute helps to considerably reduce the rate of fall or running speed of the potash and thus a careful and relatively dust-free loading of the granular material is achieved.

The machine operation is by means of a remote control unit. Equipped with the portable transmitter device, the operator has full visibility of the slewable discharge, so that the material flow and the positioning of the shiploader can be easily monitored and controlled safely.

ThyssenKrupp Fördertechnik - BU Materials Handling – has been a long standing supplier to the fertilizer industry. The contract from KTG represents another mark of confidence set in the specialized knowledge of the company.
