Quick-Change Screen for 4-Shaft Shredder

The new Series ZMK-X four-shaft shredders (Photo 1) manufactured by WEIMA Maschinenbau GmbH, Ilsfeld/Germany, feature a special screen changeover device for lowering the screen and pulling it out sideways. This facilitates rapid, easy cleaning of the whole cutting unit and screen after shredding contaminated or aggressive materials, e.g. hospital waste, plastic packing units with residue contents, saline substances, etc. In addition, various screen configurations can be used to suit the specific task and the change to another material carried out straight away.

Series ZMK-X four-shaft shredders are suitable for the general size-reduction of hollow bodies, car bumpers, etc. Compact design is one of the predominant features. The screen is located below the cutting unit and is held against the machine housing from below by means of a toggle interlock, without screws. As a result it can be released by one person onto a frame integrated into the machine housing, then pulled out on rolls onto a lateral retention device with a minimum of effort. The screen and the entire cutting unit can then be accessed for convenient, fast cleaning. The side-mounted frame can be swivelled out of the way. The four-shaft shredder is deactivated by a safety limit switch once the screen is lowered. It is consequently possible to handle the screen weighing approx. 100 kg, even when the four-shaft shredder is mounted above conveyors etc.

The screen perforation is between 15 and 80 mm in diameter, although customised screens can also be supplied. The cutting unit is available with two electric motor drives with ratings of between 2 x 18.5 kW and 2 x 30 kW. The speed of the shafts is ca. 23-25 RPM. The rotor shafts rest on bearings that are stepped from the machine housing so that no ingress of material can damage the bearings.

WEIMA Maschinenbau GmbH have been manufacturing size-reduction machines for over 20 years for a wide range of applications, for customers in the plastics, wood working and recycling industries all over the world. The company employs a staff of about 120 and has distribution locations in France, Great Britain and America, as well as over 50 agencies worldwide. The production range includes single-shaft shredders, two- and four-shaft shredders, cutting mills, briquetting presses and machines with accessories.
