Hi everyone

I have one question and I hope you can help me with this one. In our company we would like to measure moisture of Calcium carbonate material which has granulation from 2-55 mm. The dried material come from gas stove and should have 0,2 – 0,3 % of moisture, but we would like to have online measurement, because we would like to reduce consumption of gas. Capacity is 100 t/h, and rotation of conveyor belt 90 m/min.

Thank you for advice,

Best regards,

Gregor Smitek

Moisture Measurement

Posted on 1. Mar. 2007 - 10:21

Hi Gregor,

Do you intend measuring the moisture in the material going into the dryer, or coming out? The moisture at the output would appear to have very little variation and would probably not provide any significant information regarding energy control. The material would also be hot, and this may exclude near ifrared type measurement. We supply microwave online moisture analysers and would be happy to talk to you about such a system.

Dear Mr. Smitek,

fundementally it is possible to measure the moisture in Calcium carbonate with our moisture measuring systems. To serve you well please let us know more about your material which need to be measured or sent us a sample for pre-checking (quantity:

half bucketful) Also it would be very helpful to send us details (photo or sketch) of the requested installation place of the probe, if available. The material sample has to be sent to:

We hope to serve you well and are convinced to offer you the optimal technical solution.

With best regards

Thanks for the response.

@ Jon Scarrot

We would like to measure the moisture of the material which is coming out in the dryer. Now we are measuring the temperature of the material and from our experience we keep the temperature around 50 - 60 degrees. The temperature is measuring on conveyor belt and it is very unstable, because the large stones (55 mm) have lover temperature than the small one.

If you have some better solution I will be glad to hear it.

@Franz Ludwig

I will prepare some pictures and technological scheme and send you to your E-mail.

Moisture Measurement

Posted on 2. Mar. 2007 - 01:11

Hi Gregor,

CaCO3 is a material, which can be measured for H2O without problem. We have been involved in moisture measurement versus drying in blast furnace slag which was used as a cement addative. In this case we measured both the input and the output moisture. As you are probably aware, the energy to dry material can be split into two major groups, the first is the energy to bring the moisture up to boiling point and then the energy to create steam to drive the moisture out of the material. We used the input system to measure the moisture profile going into the dryer and calculate the nominal energy required.

We found that depending where the material was taken from in the stockpile the moisture could vary very considerably. This in itself can lead to very difficult control problems. Also resident time of material in the dryer can vary depending on moisture content and particle size distribution and can lead to confusing information which needs to be understood.

The output moisture monitor checks the final moisture content.

As I mentioned before, I am not sure that the output moisture measurement value would be suitable for control purposes. You really need "before the event" information in order to perform proper control.

We also found it very useful to log the data from the all the various transducers, including seasonal weather conditions, RH and air temperature and the like in order to be able to develop a control algorithm. Also useful is to monitor the stack temperature humidity and gas flow.

I would say that as long as the system was monitored closely, the energy consumption was reduced by an average of 20%.

You need good operaters who understand the process and can respond as and when required.

Hope this helps

Regards

Jon

Accurate Moisture Measurment

Posted on 7. Mar. 2007 - 09:35

Hi Gregor Smitek,

to measure the moisture in calcium carbonate is possible with our NIR-Infrared Measuring Systems UR5200. This measuring ist contactless (measuring distance 100 ... 300 mm and more) and the spot on the material is 100 mm and more (adjustable). So we can measure also materials with big particles (such as you have). The temperature of the material in your range is not interesting for the measurement with the UR5200.

Gregor,

You might be interested in our unique method of sensing the moisture "inside-the-dryer." The Delta T sensor can be installed inside your dryer and with our control system, the moisture of the calcium carbonate can be controlled. This is possible as a result of a mathematical model derived from first principles that relates product moisture to the temperature drop of hot air after contact with the wet product (delta t) and the production rate or belt speed (S). The delta T term lumps the variables involved in drying the product. Therefore, you do not need entering moisture, outlet moisture, humidity of ambient. etc. The product and dryer system is instantaneously fitted to our Delta T model simply by bringing it up to or near the target moisture content, then switching from manual to auto. takes over and controls to the target moisture content in spite of changes in water load to the dryer.
