Slipping of Bags from the Conveyor

Posted in: , on 18. Jun. 2014 - 02:09

In India, most of the fertiliser plants have flat belt conveyor for carrying the fertiliser bags. During rainy season, when the humidity is very high, the belt conveyor becomes wet and slippery and bags starts falling off the conveyor. To make belt conveyor dry, they use wood husk.I need advise from Hon. members of this forum on how to solve this problem.

Thanks

Fertiliser plants have their own solution already, wood shavings. What do other plants, such as cement works and flour mills, subject to monsoons do?

If such plants are being compromised I am afraid the blame is solely on their shoulders. In most other parts of the world the plant designers take steps to combat even moderate rainfall. They do this quite successfully and also combat strong winds and snowfalls to boot. One obvious answer is to cover the thing. If the plants didn't do that in the beginning they are hardly likely to do it some 20 years down the line after the plant has got rotted to Lanka and back. Let them live with it.

Hi Anil

we are using chain conveyors which is attched wooden bars , these stackers can be angle 40 -45 degrees , no slipping

Generally belt conveyors becomes wet bag and belt co eficent become very low , definetly bags starts falling , I think better option is chain conveyor

Dear Udita, Thanks for your reply. Please note that this a flat belt conveyor, horizontal and not inclined, about 500 m long, running across the length of the platform. Do we have any belt cleaning system where, the belt will get dry and rough again.

Thanks,Anil

Hello,

One option is to use rough top belt, to prevent slippage of bags or to reduce the chances.

The other option is to use slat chain conveyor wherein bag will tend to sag between slats and thereby better grip. This conveyor has more allowable inclination but generally this is used for lesser length. So one can use slat chain conveyor where inclination is more. For other portions there can be belt conveyors.

Respected Mulani Ji, All these conveyors who carries cement and fertilizer bags are flat belt conveyors. Can we use belt conveyors supported by two carrying idlers instead of single idler. The angle between these two idlers 75 deg.--85 %.Please suggest.

Regards, Anil

Hello,

Further to my earlier reply, if someone has issue of bags slipping or dislocation from belt edges, then solution could be to use picking type 3 rollers idler set (long middle roller and small side rollers 15 to 20 degree troughing. However bags loading arrangement should ensure bag-length along belt-length, and bags nearly at the centerline of belt (margin as per middle roller length versus bag width).

Initially belt can be flat at loading point, and then will travel on picking type idler sets. Such arrangement will need wider belt. For 450 mm bag width, the belt width could be 450 mm + 150 mm margin + 2 x 125 mm side rollers = 850 mm i.e. either 900 mm or 1000 mm belt. Such arrangement can be used if conveying distance is sufficiently long. Well I have not come across problem of properly loaded lags falling from belt sides. Also, if there is bags diverter at intermediate location, then one has to make the belt flat at that location.

Engineers sometime provide safety hand rails (smooth) over belt edges, at level half the bag thickness, to prevent accidental fall of the bags and injuring underneath persons. In this case, then one has to also account for some (few) bags drag resistance that would occur due to bags rubbing with the hand rails .
