Cranes are designed & manufactured to strict Standards. There is no margin in this process. It is a legal requirement & governed along similar lines to pressure vessel, fired or unfired, design, manufacture & use. Quite simply; you have to ascertain that the crane manufacturer can design to the duty & rating specified by the Crane Standards enforceable in the country of use.
Then you have to be satisfied that he can manufacture according to that Standard. To do this you refer to his inspection & quality assurance capabilities which should make provision for manufacturing records, material certificates etc etc.
Finally you can opt to witness the test or have it witnessed for you by an accredited 3rd party inspection authority.

European Standards are suspect pending Health & Safety investigation of a recent collapse. Chinese Standards are irrelevant unless the crane operates inside China! ■
Crane Manufacturer Checking List
One thing we do is check for ISO certification. This will make sure that their facilities are operating within standards.
I would also check for their output turnover and their clientele and get feedback from them. I would measure [turnover], [clients], [problems/returns], [resolution] among the manufacturers and compare.
By focusing on end results rather than their processes, I would save time.
Also, I would consider acquiring used - which is rather practical in this time of crisis.
