Powder ATEX

hello colleagues

I have a situation where fine pvdf powder can leak on occasion and enter a partially confined area beneath a hopper. In this area are located electric motors (not Ex rated),gears and a chain drive also an intake to a fan feeding cooling air by duct to a hot extruder casing.

My concerns are when the leak occurs or when the dust is brushed up that an explosive mixture may form and be ignited by the electric motor.Does anyone have experience of this ever occuring?

many thanks

I'm not familiar with 'pvdf powder' but assume you have had it tested to establish that it is an explosive dust and what the various characteristics are.

The first questions are how frequently does a leak actually happen, and how much dust escapes?

You may not have an ATEX rated motor, but what enclosure rating (IP) does it have and what surface temperature does it run at?

You are actually at an advantage in that the system exists so an engineering evaluation can be carried out actually measuring what is occurring.

This is far better than the usual methods of supposition and conjecture that usually surround an ATEX risk assessment.

Mindful of the previous direct translation from the French "ATEX" to the correct English "supposition & conjecture" I would suggest that you give the extruder casing a good, nearly said "seeing to", examination.

Further along the previous reply theme; have you tried stopping the leak?
