Can anyone refer me to a qualified expert for contracted advice in relation to dust explosion mitigation in the city of Brisbane, state of Queensland, Australia?

We are setting up a pharma R&D plant and are concerned about limiting the possibility of such an event.

Thanks,

Michael

Michael,

We cannot offer contracted advice, however we can certainly assist with validating explosion vent sizes and quoting for the supply of Fike explosion venting products.

I have attached a data sheet that may be of interest.

Let me know if I can help further.

Michael,

We don’t know of any process safety specialists based in Brisban with dust explosion experience and your choice may be limited. Although we are based in the UK we recently did work in Tasmania as the company we helped could not find qualified local support for a similar project.

Chilworth have offices in India, the USA and UK, and have an extensive team of Process Safety Specialists located at our various offices. If you would like to discuss your dust explosion needs we can consult with you remotely on safety management systems and risk assessments for your R&D operation.

We have a range of FREE datasheets listed on our website at www.chilworth.co.uk together with articles on hazardous area classification and obtaining appropriate safety data for establishing your bases of safety and undertaking risk assessments.

If I can help further please let me know. Regards,

Dust Explosion Consultant

Michael,

We are located in the USA, but certainly can provide the assistance required. If your facility is not yet constructed, then we would be working from drawings anyway and all this could be accomplished from here. Travel to your location is also not a problem. Contact me at bstevenson@cvtechnology.com, or call 561-683-1200.

I recommend checking out Brixon's line of Explosion Venting Latches to prevent dust explosions.

The purpose of the Brixon® pressure release safety latch is to provide venting in the event of an internal explosion, and to maintain a positive seal in order to prevent loss of heat and/or escape of gasses under normal operating conditions, while allowing access to the protected enclosure. Brixon latches are Factory Mutual Global approved as explosion-venting door latches (1998 Factory Mutual approval Guide 8-1).

For over 60 years Brixon Manufacturing has set the standard worldwide for excellence and innovation in the explosion venting latch category. Our pioneering work in safety latch systems helped build our reputation with dozens of Fortune 500 companies operating across a broad spectrum of industries. For decades we’ve partnered with both established and emerging companies in the Food, Pharmaceutical, Environmental, Chemical, Mineral, Textile, Plastics, Metals, and Dry Processing industries. The fact is: if your company manufactures or uses any equipment that encloses potentially explosive dust, gas, mist, or chemicals, you should install Factory Mutual (FM) approved Brixon® Safety Latches.

It is with a strong sense of pride that Brixon announces that we are the first company to produce all stainless steel explosion venting safety latches. Our new Brixon 90 Series is the result of years of development and testing. For the first time ever we can supply latch bodies, strikes and handles in solid stainless steel along with totally stainless internal components to make a 100% stainless steel latch.

Use of Brixon latches is not limited to explosion venting. Many of our customers specify our latches for applications where reliable retention and release features, combined with shock absorption capabilities, are required. Brixon latches are designed to operate through tens of thousands of latch and release cycles under a variety of ever-changing positive, and/or negative pressure conditions. Brixon offers the widest variety of options to suit your particular application.

Check out our latches @ www.brixon.com

You may contact me if you need contract help on dust explosion prevention or protection of processes. I have co-authored: "Design Guide for Combustible Solids" along with Larry Britton whose name is well known. I was with him for more than 25 years while working for Union Carbide Corporation as a process design specialist in the bulk solids area.
