Dust Suppression System

Posted on 5. Jun. 2007 - 11:16

There are two areas where dust generation may occur. Firstly, when material is discharged at the stockpile by the stacking conveyor. The second area is from the stockpile due to wind.

For sprinkler system around the stockpile, as indicated by Mr.Mulani is well accepted procedure in the industry. Typically, in tropical country, evaporation rate considered is approximately 1.5lit/sqm/hr and water addition is done accordingly during peak summer. Any dust suppression system supplier can install this system.

But to minimize dust generation at stacker discharge is slightly tricky. The main idea for dust suppression system is add some moisture (say 0.5%) to the material so that dust generation is reduced. For effective dust suppression at stacker conveyor discharge, at least two to three upstream transfer points are required to be provided with dust suppression system application points (nozzles) distributing the total moisture. If this is not possible due to plant layout, a retractable telescopic chute at stacker discharge will be a better solution.

Dust And Bulldust

Hi S. Chandra,

At Port Hedland, and Finicane Island, the mining company has spent thousands of dollars for a Consultant's Research and Development Report on dust control for open iron ore stockpiles. The Report was 20 mm thick, with lots of research test data.

The stockpiles were so big that normal fire-fighting equipment could not reach them. So they installed an automatically controlled dust suppression system with water canon at twice the pressure of the fire hydrants.

The droplets have to be just the right size to prevent the fine dust from getting away, and into your lungs. Evaporation can quickly reduce the size of the droplet within nanoseconds. Once the water evaporates it releases its hold on the superfines on the crust surface. You can't see the dust it is so fine - unless it is near sunset. You can then just detect the hidden movement of solid particles in the air.

When the Finicane Island Plant was sold, the new owners wanted to upgrade the dust control. Can't we use the dust control circuit for fire fighting? You would need pressure reducing valves at every fire hydrant, lest you bust the canvas hoses.

I knew something about dust suppression, but not that much about water canon applications, and mixing this with fire fighting equipment.

Here is the 20 mm Research Report, and these are the old plans of the dust supression system. Sorry we haven't got anything better, but all records have been lost in the past 20 years. I want a full design specification and bid on my desk by Monday. We are in a competitive bid situation with other consultants.

I never finished the bid. I walked out of there and into the Psychiatric Ward of our Hospital. I was in mental shock for 3 - 4 weeks.

To this day that research and development information is company intellectual property. The results are not available to others in our industry. So you rely on the technical expertise of irrigation spray salesmen working in a competitive, cut-throat industry.

Does your cloud have a pink lining?

John,

You shouldn't worry about engineering so much. Console yourself with the fact that the clowns who allowed such big stockpiles sleep easy in their claim jumpers beds. Especially after they'd unloaded the dump onto a similar claim jumper.

For dust suppression that really works and is verified to do so you should see www.cypherltd.com under Dust Stop. This is primarily for stockpiles which seem to be a problem for you but on haul roads or most other instances where dust must be contained in an effective and environmentally friendly manner this is the preferred product.

Mines, oil companies, resource companies, construction sites of the highest magnitude use Dust Stop at www.cypherltd.com under dust stop and this may solve your problem. Hope it does since it is 100% environmentally friendly and totally effective.
