I am a mech engineer, and am currently a full-time mum. I cant find any courses suitable for my situation, but am determined to venture into bulk materials handling system design. I want to do my own self-paced study, and want to get it right (systematically), and as you know, there are millions of references out there.

I am chasing advice on which books, and in which order to study to ensure a well rounded & complete knowledge of material handling system design.

It is important for me, however that any detailed mathematics is in METRIC UNITS to avoid confusion & expedite my learning.

Thankyou for your help,

Katie

Are you working in Gladstone?

Knowledge , is simply what is waiting to be discovered and used.

Michael Reid.

Yes, I inquired into the Masters of Bulk Solids, as I have been interested in doing this since I was working, however because I am now a full time mum (with very young child) & one on the way, it is not currently financially, or phys viable. I plan to do this in the future, but for now, I am looking at my own self-paced study.

I might ask Peter if he can direct me towards a few good books.

Thanks,

Katie.

I worked for 4 years post-grad from CQU Uni as a Project Engineer in CARBON at Boyne Smelter's Ltd, in a small team of 2/3 managing capital projects from concept to closeout. I then stopped working to have a family (so worth it), but I am getting itchy feet, and feel the need to continue with some home studies (bulk materials handling is my interest). Its hard though, when you don't have any structure to your studies & many interuptions!!!

When I am ready, I plan to work with consultants and focus on my design skills.

Where are you working?

Katie.

Hi Katie,

As you have stated, there are a number of reference books available. Depending on your area of interest, you can find detailed information.

For a good overview of belt conveyor systems, start with the Foundation Series of books from Martin Engineering. These are light on mathematics, but provide insight into some of the major problem areas associated with conveying bulk materials on belts.

A detailed reference book is that written by Mr. Mulani (one of the top posters on this forum). This will give you the mathematics.

Finally, there are a number of software programs available that do the math for you. One of the better sources for these is Conveyor Dynamics (contact Mr. Nordell). Alternatively, contact Mr. Gary Blenkhorn, who has evaluated a number of programs, for his opinion on which programs are the best for your needs.

Once you have started with these, you can obtain specific information from trade organizations and major suppliers.

Hope this helps.

Katie,

It's good to see your interest. There are some courses you can do that have excellent course material such as Dave Beckley's course but you are highlighting a real problem in the industry. If you want to email me om colin.benjamin@gcsm.com.au and give me more details as to your background and experience I will try and detail out some options for you. One thing I do know it is not an easy text book learning exercise so getting access to opportunities to observe and interact are vey important.

Dear all,

I am interested in knowing more about Dave Beckley's course. Is it available Online?

Dear Rekhawar,

David's course is not online. It is a 4 day course that covers all aspects of materials handling design. It can be extended a day to cover safety training. The course has one of the most instructive design manuals I have come across. At issue is Dave will only run the course for classes of at least 12 but he is mobile. I am a friend of Dave's, not a colleague but the fact the course is used by so many major players in Australia to train their young engineers speaks volumes.

Handbooks On Solids Handling Technology

Posted on 28. Feb. 2005 - 11:31

I don't know if this is up your street, but we publish a series of handbooks on solids handling technology. These were developed to support our various short courses in the area, but are stand-alone reference works in their own right so could help your study. I would emphasise that they do not constitute a course as such, but a thorough readong of them could form a good grounding.

We have four main ones, these being "Bulk Solids Handling - the Technology, problems and solutions" which is a wide-ranging book on the basic of lots of different handling technologies including conveying by belt, screw, pipeline etc., storage and feeding, instrumentation etc. Then there is one on Pneumatic Conveying, one on Hopper and Silo Design, one on Inventory Monitoriing and Management. All these have about 300-400 pages and start from the basics but cover the maths too.

Then we have a number of shorter handbooks including "Product Quality" (i.e. effects of handling on the materials, how to predict it and minimse unwanted problems of particle breakage, segregation, caking etc) at about a hundred pages, and various shorter notes of about 30 pages on other aspects of solids handling.

Have a look at our web site www.bulksolids.com or drop me an email bm08@gre.ac.uk if interested.

Mike.
