Belt Belt Belt Belt
for our belt repairs for the past 15+ years. I have been tasked with starting a belt
repair department for small (<10in) repairs. The question I have is does anyone know
of a company that can do a somewhat comprehensive training program (about 4-5 days)
detailing belt construction and repair criteria?
We have three steel cable belts that span from underground to surface milling operations.
Thank you in advance for your feedback.

UH HUH.
How long are belt flights? are they linear in path or are you using a zig, zag incline?
Am I safe in assuming the incline/slope is 21 degrees?
Goodyear
Fenner Dunlop
Michelin
Uniroyal
To name a few and it does not take four or five days to do this.
The thing is this the regional belt distributors are the ones that do the splicing and
you would be taking business away from their traveling crews that install and splice belts.
Now you have to decide if you really want to
learn how to splice belts as there are NO small
repairs ever.
You are going to have to justify the purchase of a steam powered belt
curing system $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
or an electric curing unit--------------------------$ and all the fun that goes along with
it as YOU will do it no faster or possibly less expensively than the belt splicers/installers
that do it world wide. ■
Re: On Site Training Program To Start Belt Repair Department
I would talk to your belt manufacturer - they typically provide that kind of training. For example Fenner Dunlop has a certification program for belt splicing. http://www.fennerdunlopamericas.com/pdf/binder1.pdf
I would caution you on this though. On any new belt you do on your own may void the warranty by doing any repairs yourself unless the person doing the work has been certified by the belt manufacturer.
We looked at exactly what you are talking about. We bought Shaw Almex splice gear, trained some guys at the Scandura school in Ohio and they never used the equipment. The first time we went to use it the guys had pretty much forgot what they had learned. We ended up selling the splicing gear two years later never used for about half the price we paid for it.
My advise is leave belt repairs and splicing to the professionals that do this on a daily basis. Make it part of your maintenance budget. ■

Training For Belt Repairs
Hi Matt,
Your best two sources for training on belt repair and splicing are:
NIBA The Belting Association (www.niba.org)
Shaw Almex (http://almex.com/en/training/)
I expect many of your local service contractors in Colorado are now owned by the belting manufactures (Solid Systems, Conveyor Services and King Energy). The above resources can help and also provide a lot of guidance in overseeing your belt service work.
Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

I work for an underground mine in Colorado. We have been using contractors for our belt repairs for the past 15+ years.
