Sandvik supplies the world’s largest compact bucket wheel excavator to Mtra Kraftwerk AG

Start of assembly for the new compact bucket wheel excavator and beltwagon at the Bükkbrny open pit mine

In July 2007 the Austrian branch for Materials Handling, a business division of Sandvik Mining and Construction, was commissioned by the Mtra Kraftwerk AG with the supply of a compact bucket wheel excavator (BWE) including beltwagon. Sandvik’s cooperation and excellent business relationship with the customer goes back many years. In 1986 Sandvik supplied the customer three giant open pit mining units, a bucket wheel excavator, a beltwagon and a spreader; these units have been operating successfully for the last 20 years

The new bucket wheel excavator - its design and dimensions make it the world’s largest compact-type bucket wheel excavator - with a total weight of around 1,650 tons has a 28-meters long boom on which the 12-meter diameter bucket wheel is located. Alone the power output of the bucket wheel, fitted with 16 buckets, is around 1,100 kilowatt - the entire power output of the compact bucket wheel excavator amounts to 3,200 kilowatt.

The beltwagon, which is needed for the flexible operation of the main unit, has a total conveying length of 80 meters and a weight of around 660 tons. The entire unit (compact bucket wheel excavator including beltwagon) is designed for a conveying output of around 6,700 lm/h or an annual capacity of 12 million bank cubic meters.

After completing the detailed design and the fabrication of the main components Sandvik Mining and Construction started with the assembly of the entire unit at the beginning of November. Completion is expected to be in about eight month’s time to enable the first overburden to be conveyed from the Bükkbrny open pit mine by mid-2009.

For Sandvik Mining and Construction this order is of great significance. It has enabled the company to take another important step into the European open pit mining sector and to once again demonstrate its competence as one of the world's leading suppliers of open pit mining equipment.
