How to make the small silos?

Posted in: , on 3. Oct. 2007 - 06:34

Hello, everyone, I am Cynthia, coming from Zhengzhou HELI steel silo manufactuing co.,ltd.

we are a professional steel silo manufacturer in China, and our silos capacities are from 100t to 17,000t. During working, I will get some needs of small silos, such as 10t or 8t, I'd like to know if reduce the silo capacity from 100t to 10t, is there any special requirements if the steel sheets, such as the strenght or length?

I am glad to become a member , hope we can discuss together, and cooperate.

Small Tin Silos

Hi helisteelsilo,

1 - I recommend you contact a qualified Structural Engineer for the design of silos. The British Steel Association has a very thorough design Code for design of silos. So does the Australian Standards Association.

2 - Small silos are usually made of 6 mm plate steel - to potect from corrosion. 3 mm plate is the thinest you can use without problems with welding rods burning trough the metal and causing problems.

3 - In the grain industry galvanised sheet metal is used - flat metal plates, or corrugated iron rivetted together.

Suggest you talk to someone who understands steel design.

As far as fabrication tolerances are concerned, I assume that you are using "resheared and re-squared" plates for your large silos and the tolerances of these should be OK for small hoppers as well.

As john suggests 3 mm is a good rule of thumb for easy fabrication but companies who make small hoppers of this type oftem work in much thinner materials, particularly for the hopper cones.

1.5 mm is not uncommon for 10 te hopper cones in some industries but others would be horrified if you suggested anything less than 6 mm.

Thank You Very Much

Thank you for replying.

so as you mentioned, in the processing of making small silos, the thinner steel sheet could be used, i got this information, thank you very much!
