Steel cord conveyor - Edge repairs

Can anyone help me on a repair procedure for broken cords on the side of a steel cord conveyor belt? (+- 8 to 10 cords broken)

Do we need to lay cords in between the damaged cords in the repair? How long should the cords be for different class belts?

A little more information would be very helpful.

1. What is the present cable pitch and how many cables are in the belt

2. Can interlaced cables be placed between the present cables of the same size

3. What is the ST rating

4. How long is the damaged section

5. What is the present belt safety factor considering idler transition design and vertical convex curve design

6. How long do you wish to operate in the present condition

7. Does the belt mistracking around the break cause other problems

8. How much reserve belt is stored in the takeup

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

In direct response to the question I comment as follows:

1. Ideally, you should cut out the damaged section of belt across its full width and replace it with new.

2. The local damaged cut out section length should be evaluated for proximity to nearby splices. It may be advisable to cut out a nearby splice to regain full belt strength so the splice-to-splice interaction does not compromise overall strength

3. A local interlaced repair will not be as strong as the parent belt

4. If the present pitch does not allow one-for-one interlacing of cables of the same size, with a pitch of about 1.5-2mm or more, the belt will likely fail within a short time period depending on how close to the original splice strength is achievable and the present belt safety factor utilization

5. Belt elasticity will not be equal across the belt, at the repair for a number of reasons which will effect tracking and add to the local stress at the repair -- hight tension transition idler induced stress will likely dominate the life expectancy

6. The repair length should be equal or greater than the present splice step length assuming there is, at present, a one step splice. If you have multiple steps, the repair will be longer

6. A fabric reinforcement above and below the cables would aid the repair

The above response is a short list. More needs to be known to render a fully qualified response.

Conveyor DYnamics, Inc. (CDI) does evaluate belt splices using finite element methods (FEM). We have also investigated damaged sections and advised on local repairstrength. There is an accepted procedure. Edge cable damage exceeding 10% of the belt width is not advisable unless there is a large strength reserve.

Sorry for this additon:

Under item 4 of my direct response the pitch refers to the rubber gap between cables of parent and inlaided cable placement.

Synmanhl:

Your best source for this information is the belt manuafacturer.

A secondary source for you is your local independent belt service company (if you have one). These companies specialize in belt splicing and repairs. Plus, they usually have good resources to call on in the industry.

As Mr. Nordell has pointed out, a great deal more information is required before any meaningful response can be given.

Snymanhl,

Mr. Nordell is trying to help you, as can be seen from his message. However, if still you have difficulty in solving your problem, I suggest you to obtain the advice from belt manufacturer / supplier also who will have all the factual information about the internal parameters of belt.
