It would help if you gave us some specifications of your belt conveyor.

Take-Up With No Mass = No Tower

I assume you wish to know the take-up required if a gravity take-up is not used?

If so, we need the conveyor design parameters you have assumed to arrive at the operating tension that guarantees drive traction and unacceptable belt sag for all operating conditions.

We further should know the design philosophy of the take-up if it is auto-powered or manually fixed.

Belt Tension With Drive Torque

Posted on 19. Jul. 2010 - 09:42

Dear Sir:

anyone idea for relations between belt tension and drive torque?

if so, can we get some formula of this two values? then we can setup some relations to control the take up trension of winch.

thanks

John,

Yes, there is a relationship between belt tension and drive torque. It's published in all design guides.

Let drive station have :

Incoming tension = T1 @ Drive pulley

Outgoing tension = T2 @ Drive pulley - sometimes the take-up value

Drive torque = (T1-T2)/Pulley Radius @ low speed shaft

This is the simple form. There are many other factors that must be known to make a design work.

I guess you can consider electronic winch as an option. Alternatively Hydrualic actuation.

What's wrong with a simple counterweight?

Regarding suppliers of automatic winch systems (some call it electronic counterweight) you can try Nepean (either Australia or South Africa), or Dymot in South Africa, and I'm sure there are many more.

Hagglunds I believe do a hydraulic system.

Dear Mr. Rafael Tozzo,

Primarily the take-ups are known by three names (1) Gravity operated, (2) Screw type take-up, (3) Winch operated take-up. In reality, functionally it converts into two types i.e. floating type and fixed type. Gravity is floating type. Screw is of fixed type. Generally winch also happens to be of fixed type, but it can also have a sensor, to keep it active during conveyor operation.

You do not intend to have counter weight i.e. gravity take-up. Therefore you have two other options. Screw type will be for short length conveyor. The winch type can be for conveyor of any capacity and any length. Please refer to the conveyor manufacturers / designers who will decide the most suitable arrangement.
