Impact of Brake on Belt Rating and Take-up

Posted in: , on 5. Apr. 2013 - 07:21

Dear Experts,

Providing brake to a conveyor increase the belt rating and the counter weight requirement, incomparison to the same conveyor without brake.

What is the theory or concept behind this?

How to minimize the impact? and How to calculate the impact?

Brake Rating & Belt Rating

Your statement is not correct.

It is not necessary to increase belt rating when applying a brake. Usually, the brake is tailored to the allowable momentary belt stress allowance. A overload factor of 40% comes to mind, such as with some soft-starting methods.

The same can be said for the take-up, depending on type and its controls. In some cases, the counterweight rating may be increased. In addition, the allowable pulley to belt friction value may be increased depending on the safety issues and potential for belt slippage.

In the later case, a slight increase in belt rating may be warranted. This is only an issue with substantial brake action, that exceeds the norm for the belt rating. Some safety issues demand a larger brake to attempt to reduce likelihood of personnel injury with high rate of braking as implied by a pull-cord stop. Even in this instance, the overall safety of operating personnel may not warrant a highly unusual brake action that otherwise would overstress a belt.

Most belts can be mometarily overstressed to below a safety factor of 4:1. If done, the belt must undergoe special inspection to determine if a local splice or two were damaged that would not be immediiately visible.

Dear Mr.Nordell,

Thanks! for your reply.

For the same, can we use a capstan brake instead of increasing the counterweight, to avoid belt slip occuring during braking?

Yes, if you know what you are doing and how to do it.
