Horizontal conveyor; head or tail drive?

Posted in: , on 21. Sep. 2006 - 08:20

Hi, i am faisul and this is my first assignment to design a belt conveyor. my new BC receives limestone from a vibrating screen above and discharge it to the other BC below it. i need your advise on where (head / tail pulley) to put my drive for this short belt conveyor;

Installed Power,P1 3 kW

Belt Speed,v 120 m/min

Conveyor Center,L 5000 mm

we have VS discharge chute (3000mm) in the middle of the BC and discharge chute at the end of the BC (one direction only).

We use take up bearing to control belt tension.

The drive is of wedge belt and motor.

Drive pulley is attached with shaft mounted speed reducer.

My opinion is, drive should be at head pulley for easy maintenance.

I'm sure you all have other consideration which I would like to hear!

Regards.

faisul

A drive at the head end seems quite reasonable.

Dear Mr. Faisul,

The drive location for short conveyor of 5m length, does not make difference from economy point of view, whether it is placed at head end or tail end. The conventionally used drive location is generally governed by economy in broad sense.

In case of your conveyor the dominant consideration would be the space available for its installation in your transfer house etc. So, you can place the drive unit either at head end or tail end. If it is at head end then take-up will be at tail end and vice-versa.

on a small conveyor like this,,, i would use a motorized head pulley to help distribute the weight better also less maintence.

Motor and reduction gear is all inside the pulley. so you don't have all the weight of the motor and reducer hanging on the side of the frame .
