I am sri lankan material handling Engineer. I want to design trough belt conveyor for granite. Size of the Conveyor is 1.5 m width and 500 m long (Belt is 1.3 m ). this is horizontal conveyor, last end 8 m has 5 degree inclination.

quest 1. How to automatic tracking belt system ?

Quest 2. belt installation is easy endless belt or open belt ?

quest 3. How to install belt ?

With all respect to your abilities you should go to the nearest conveying equipment supppier and have them give you an estimate as it is much simpler for your sake to have them to do it for you as conveyor belt design and sysem integration is what they do best.

a five foot wide conveyor for any diistance take a lot of work and set up as you cannot just set it on the ground anywhere unless it set up with an elephant walk configuration of connection and carriers for same.

The first thing you have failed to mention is your budgetary guidelines/available funding as that is what ove sees the entire project.

The other problem is the statements are vague; meaning do you have the conveying system in your possession and if so are you simply looking for something that will force the belt to track properly?

you have not mentioned if the belt is steel supported or cable supported and this is a big factor in general as it will effect the installation.

you have not discussed the drive and tail pulley system- do you intend on have a head end drive unit or a mid belt drive unit

what about the take up(belt tensioner unit) is it hydraulic or the gravity type?

proper belt tracking is simply done with proper splicing teqniques whether they are mechanical splices or vulcanised and training idlers for the troughing side and return idler side of the belt i.e.

Any conveying system requires one troughing training idler for every ten troughing idlers and 1 training returm idler for every 10 return idlers in the conveyor belt so you will need:

at least 50 troughing training idlers and 50 return training idlers.

Lastly a conventional conveyor may not be a good option as coventional haulage even with small narrow guage rail or trucks has become even more competitve cost wise.

Any material handling engineer would not be asking these questions.

I couldn't agree more!

Free advice is one thing, free design and engineering is something else.

First: The belt will automatically track when:

1. center loading of product at the feed chute (assuming no large lumps)

2. proper installation of alignment idlers and pulleys normal to belt axis

3. proper installation of belt without splice irregularities

4. proper belt construction

5. proper conveyor design

You do not need any other equipment.

Your other two questions are a puzzle to answer. They have no merit.

Second: All conveyor belts this forum addresses are endless. Any non-endless will not fit the forum format.

Third: Ask any belt manufacturer how to install.

Your nationality is of no consequences. It appears you have never designed a belt conveyor. Why would you specify 1.5m wide belt and then discuss "belt is 1.3m"?

I couldn't agree more with the previous respondents.

As Larry states a properly designed and properly installed system will not require a tracking system.

Belt tracking sytems are used to hide those flaws in the conveyor sytem.

Graham,

I already said that. Why do you have to repeat me all the time?

Maybe the comment was tongue in cheek or a suck it and see.

Ha, Ha.

What I ment was every tenth return idler mr. spriggs, sorry about that error- this is what the continental folks told me many years ago so if I am wrong they are also.

Besides the point the splice is only as good as the belt used or the person installing the splice(thier training and tooling-meaning I worked with people who cut belts with carpet knives and steel rulers so don't get me wrong.

another good point is the proper belt- we were sold a 3 ply conveyor belt that was claimed to be as good as a six ply-

guess what it?, did not work and it stretched and failed and spilled so you get what you pay for.

Dear Uditha

Do you able to give a sketch of the conveyor you are speaking about? I can give the answers, Ultimately your question is partially understood. I can give you the answer if you make the question bit clear with a sketch.
