I am Brazilian land which is happening the world cup which is ultimately very interesting.

I'm working on a project where we buy the international market, I am having difficulty translating the type of factory which produces tank, silos, chutes through welds. Professionals working in this industry is called boilermaker and the factory but what's it called? Platework or boiler shop or other? Which is correct?

Tanks, silos and chutes are very very rarely made by the same outfit.

Tanks will be made by a firm which has Coded Welders qualified to ASME and who are used to working to API.

Silos are just as important but engineered according to American Civil Standards or their equivalent. Coded Welders are often required.

Chutes are usually shop fabricated by platers and should undergo FAT before delivery.

Only the smallest tanks and silos can be Factory Acceptance Tested: the rest must be site assembled and tested: which is a major headache for remote dry sites.

All the manufacturers are fabricators and often carry a prefix describing their main product line. Boilermaker is outdated, though no less respected. I have worked for all the products manufactured here and I have not heard the name boilermaker since 1978, in Saath Effrika.

So I can say the fabricator works at MANUFACTURING

(the place)? Do you know term Platework?

Here (Brazil) we use ASME or API for tanks or pressures vessels. Silos and chutes we havent especific laws.

Thanks for all. Paulo

Dear Paulo,

description of company: tank manufacturer, vessel manufacturer

description of activity: tank construction, vessel construction

platework is the definition of an object that that has been manufactured from plates, with (today) strong notion of welding being involved

to manufacture means to make goods, so manufacturing is the process to do so and a manufacturer is an enterprise which is making things

R.
