With an export rate of more than 90 percent, the AUMUND group of companies is a classic example for a successful medium size business engaged in the world market. Now the Chairman of the Board of Management Franz-Walter Aumund celebrated his 65th birthday.
Franz-Walter Aumund has now been leading the group of companies with its currently more than 400 employees worldwide on four continents for more than 20 years in the third generation: With his creativity, his grandfather professor Heinrich Aumund laid the company's foundation which still proves to be stable today. His father, lawyer Günter Claus Aumund transformed the powerhouse for new ideas into a highly productive manufacturing plant. In the company history, the current head of the firm stands for the worldwide expansion of the AUMUND business.
After finishing a bank apprenticeship and international studies in financial management in the UK and in Switzerland, Franz-Walter Aumund started his activities at AUMUND as a sales manager from 1976. The central task of the young head of sales was the expansion of the export business.
With high personal commitment he built up a worldwide sales organisation and, supported with growing success by an active technical sales team, presented concepts for possible applications of AUMUND machines to potential customers all over the world. All products which had proven their worth under the tough operating conditions of blast furnaces and in the mining industry could also be used in the comparable processes of the cement plants without any need for fundamental changes.
During his sales trips to Italy, France and Greece, Franz-Walter Aumund visited leading cement groups and trading companies of Europe, with which he established first contacts. The reference of being a "leading supplier to the German, Japanese, French and Belgian mining industry" opened important doors for the young head of sales. Soon, AUMUND products became a renowned name not only within Europe but also in North and South America, Asia and Australia.
After the successful expansion into the markets abroad, the company very quickly faced new challenges: A stronger local presence and the establishing of an optimum local service network increasingly gained importance.
In 1975, Franz-Walter Aumund founded subsidiaries in Canada and Brazil. In the next years AUMUND extended the sales network and in 1981 a further subsidiary was founded in the USA. On 25th January 1982, 38-year-old Franz-Walter Aumund was appointed to be a member of the company management.
Independent from the growing success, time and again problematic situations emerged during the years which he and his management team had to master: In response to the changing worldwide economical conditions (temporary dollar slump, downturn of prices, the subsidy policy of other countries, the crisis in Asia), he reorganised his company. He concentrated the business divisions in independent AUMUND companies beneath the roof of a holding company and thus gained the necessary flexibility.
The acquisition of the traditional company LOUISE Fördertechnik GmbH of Cologne and its integration into the AUMUND Group in 1991 further added to the know-how in the field of conveying bulk materials. Troughed chain conveyors, rotary discharge machines and the CentrexTM silo discharge machines are still sold today under the LOUISE brand name, primarily to the power industry.
At the beginning of 2001, Franz-Walter Aumund extended the company's product portfolio by the acquisition of SCHADE Lagertechnik in Herne. SCHADE counts on an encompassing know-how in stockyard and blending bed technology. One year later, with the acquisition of the UK company B&W Mechanical Handling Ltd in Ely shiploaders and other mobile loading and unloading systems which are mainly used in ports and terminals, were added to the product range. Thus, in the meantime, a wide variety of different solutions for the handling of bulk materials of all kinds is offered under the roof of the AUMUND group of companies – as a result of the prudent acquisition policy of the owner.
Today, AUMUND stands as a synonym for technological top performance in the field of hot and abrasive bulk material transport. Individual, technically sophisticated products in the domain of the materials handling and stockyard technology contributed to placing AUMUND worldwide in an excellent position, partly even as a market leader. Materials handling products from the engineering or production in Rheinberg are worldwide recognised as customised solutions, regardless of size and capacity rating.
Franz-Walter Aumund has contributed a major share to this development. At present, leaving the company is no topic for him who has just celebrated his birthday.
