Hard-coal coke pneumatic conveying, Russia

Posted in: , on 19. Feb. 2008 - 16:35

3rd revision

We serch for the equipement for conveying hard-coal coke from the railcar to the silo and then to the oven hoper. The height gradient is 15-20 m, the ambient temperature summer (max) + 40°C, winter (min) - 40°C.

The material humiditiy is 0.5 %

Abrasiveness - very high

Explosiveness - low

density 600-800 kg/m

dispersiveness - <0-1 mm (50%), 2.0-3.0 mm (30%), 3.0-5.0 mm - (20%)

Unloading station have to unload cocke from railcar hoppers to the silo.

Conveyor #1, length=30 m, (see the figure #1) performance 1000 m3/over 2 weeks - once in 2 weeks railcar will unload batch into the silo #1 and #2.

Conveyor #2, length=70 m, performance is instant (nonuniform) and have to transfer 60 m3 to the oven hopper in most efficient way during 24 hours.

Oven hopper performance is uniform (see the figure) and equals 60 m3/24 hours

Dear Pawlow,

I made an “educated guess” calculation, resulting in the following figures:

hard coal coke average particle size 3 mm

bulk density 700 kg/m3

material density 1500 kg/m3

suspension velocity approx. 5.7 m/sec at atmospheric conditions

convey air volume 0.7 m3/sec

pipe diameter 8”

begin air velocity 13.8 m/sec

end air velocity 28.6 m/sec

capacity 6 tons/hr

at pressure 1.5 bar(o)

energy consumption 18.2 kWh/ton

From this exercise it can be concluded that pneumatic conveying of this material should be possible.

BUT, before starting a project as you are considering, it is absolutely necessary to execute a thorough pre-evaluation study on the physics of such an installation.

May be it is inevitable to perform tests. (f.i. with bulk trucks)

Also the wear problem has to be investigated in depth.

The feeding of this pneumatic conveying installation and the controls are also expected to be a difficult problem.

A mistake would involve a large capital investment loss.

For such a low capacity per day, a bulck truck will do the same job at lower risk (and possibly lower cost)

Try to find other alternatives and better not focus on pneumatic conveying alone.

Dear Pawlow,

The previous given “educated guess” calculation was for the 2020 m pipeline.

About your revised system, I have the following questions:

Pneumatic conveying system #1 :

Total length 30m with a horizontal length of 15 m and a vertical length of 15m ?

Pneumatic conveying system #2 :

Total length 70m with a horizontal length of ?? m and a vertical length of ?? m ?

From your drawing I think that you want to empty the railcar with a vacuum system and transfer from the silos to the oven hopper with a pressure system.

Am I correct?

best regards

Dear sir

How about your project now?I think we can offer you the solution.I saw your drawing, it is a vacuum system. Could you tell me about your capacity, I mean ?ton/a. The granular size?

We would like to suggest you to consider a ceramic lined ball valve for this application due to the valve is really effective for abrasive resistant use.
