Wood Pellets and the PSC MCT 300-WP

The Pellet sector of wood production is growing quickly and manufacturers are unable to keep up with market demand. Meanwhile, existing pellet plants are expanding and automating their processes. PSC can help with your process.

Moisture control is one of the major challenges for pellet plant operators. PSC offers 24 hours a day, seven days a week moisture monitoring through out the process. Being proactive with moisture measurement offers cost savings in the manufacturing process and eliminates the chance of packaging wet or low quality product

Making wood pellets is all about grinding up wood waste and carefully drying the sawdust in preparation for the pellet press. Wood pellets are a renewable energy source with a zero net contribution of greenhouse gases. Wood pellets are a bio-fuel which is considered the only sizeable alternative to fossil fuel. Europe is far ahead of the US in pellet usage. Besides home use, wood pellets are used to heat entire communities with central heating stations and also for power generation. There is a fast growing need for wood pellet heating, as it is clean, efficient and less expensive.

We can help the pellet manufacturer with our MCT 300-WP by giving real time moisture readings in several areas of the production process. The first MCT 300-WP would be mounted above the input conveyor with a large readout for the loader operator to see. With an instant moisture reading, the operator can control and balance the amount of moisture going into the dryer by adding sawdust from dry and wet piles. The second MCT 300-WP would be after the dryer to monitor the output in real time. This moisture reading is important to the dryer operation and can be used to bin wet or dry sawdust.

Most operations will blend the dried and milled sawdust to ensure the amount of moisture is correct for the pellet press. This reading is important for the press operator. Sometimes we feed the 4-20ma output directly to the PLC, which will be programmed to control the press drive parameters.

The results of using the PSC MCT 300-WP will be better products at lower manufacturing costs.
