SGS supplies a combined Worm-Spur Gear Drive for a Ladle Tilting Cradle of the Dillinger Hüttenwerke AG

Order of the design and manufacturing of the special gear in the course of a plant modernization – Delivered three weeks in advance of contractual date

St. Ingbert, September 2010 - SGS Sonder Getriebe Service delivers a worm-spur gear unit of a new ladle tilting device three weeks in advance of the targeted delivery date for the Dillinger Hüttenwerke AG. This special gear unit is part of the device that tilts the ladle in a horizontal position. It is designed to withstand the enormous impact loads that occur during the tilting operation. For that the gearing is laid out to carry temporary seven times the nominal load.

"To give consideration to such high loads during the design already, all load carrying parts and components where analyzed and optimized by using the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) method" says Uwe Hackenberger, the managing director of SGS. The impact loads are carried from the output shaft through the whole gear system and are reaching the highest loads when the 200 tons heavy ladle is tilted back from the horizontal position into the vertical position. At this moment the maximum weight of the ladle device is pressing into the pivot points of the ladle cradle. "Those enormous loads are absorbed by a torsions shaft device" explains Hackenberger.

The order of this complex gear system was awarded to SGS in the beginning of this year from the Dillinger Hüttenwerke AG in relation with a plant modernization. SGS designed and manufactured this special gear type in less than six month.
