Books that you have read which may help me

Hi Guys,

I have just registered to this forum. I believe this forum is great and very helpful for everybody. Thank you all for your great posts.

I am a mechanical design engineer now working in the area of conveyor drives. I need to study about the conveyor design in general and specifically belt conveyors for bulk materials handling.

I found a book in CEMA site but unfortunatelly it is not in metric.

Can you please let me know about the books you have read and you think they are good source for a beginner?

Thank you

Regards

Alex

The latest version of the MHEA (Materials Handling Engineers Association http://www.mhea.co.uk/) "Recommended Practice for Troughed Belt Conveyors" is in metric. It's the one with the pale blue cover.

But you may have to search to find a copy

IMO though the best source of knowledge is not books, but working in a materials handling company with experienced designers. Just because someone has written something in a book doesn't make it right

Thanks Designer

I agree with you. working for a company that designs conveyors is the best way and quickest way to learn but at the moment I do not have that opportunity.

So, I prefer to study the basics from the books at this stage.

Thank you again.

The MHEA website says "The two key 'Recommended Practice' design guides for troughed belt conveyors & chutes/transfer points are now undergoing a strategic review." Whatever that means.

The book we are all waiting for is the one written by Nordell, Spriggs et al.

It'll come in several volumes & they'll all be worth the read.

For now your better sources are the belt manufacturers catalogues Fenner, Dunlop something or other, Continental etc. Yokohama & Bando used to have good catalogues but they have gone to ground along with MHEA.

Probably means dead and buried.

Maybe someone should scan a copy for the MHEA so it can be put on their web site.

I made a .pdf some years ago but I don't know what the copyright situation would be. I'm surprised the membership is so high (39). Yes "dead & buried", maybe the paragraphs on stockpiling (strategic ) were quite helpful after all.

Hi Alex,

Try to find the Good Year Handbook, and also the Conti-Tech Handbook.

Phoenix has also a publication called Design Fundamentals.

Martin Engineering has also a good book called Foundations, this is about cleaning devices.

And the one of best technical publications in this field is the magazine Bulk-Solids Handling, from Transtech.

These are good literature for both professionals, experienced and beginners.

Good luck.
