We are using aero-mechanical conveyors to convey sulphur powder.

However we are finding that at those velocities (appr. 100-150m/min) the galvanised wire rope on which the discs are mounted is corroding and becoming almost like powder and failing!

Can anyone tell me why this is happening because to my knowledge sulphur does not chemically corrode zinc.

Teh temperatures are ambient ~25 deg C.

The velocity of your cable and disc assembly has nothing to do with any corrosion - normal velocity for these conveyors is between 3 and 4 meters per sec. The company operating the plant ought to know what materials of construction are best suited to their processes. What you have to bear in mind is that an aero-mechanical conveyor is a bit like an elongated rotary valve: whatever volume of powder is discharged at the outlet will be replaced by an equivalent volume of air, or whatever atmosphere is in the receiving vessel. Displaced atmosphere, gas or vapour will use the return tube of the elevator as a vent, with resulting damage caused by whatever corrosive elements are present.

We are manufacturers of AMC's and also sell spare wire rope assemblies for all major types of these machines. I would like to know more about your problem to see if I can help you. Can you please tell me the following:-

1. Who is the manufacturer of the AMC?

2. Distance product is conveyed?

3. Size of conveyor (tube diameter)?

4. Number of working hours the machine runs per day/week?

5. Average life of rope?

6. Density and moisture of powder?
