Flow rate through orifices on rotating drum

Dear Sirs,

One of the most commonly used implement for sowing paddy seeds in India is drum seeder. It consists of about 20 cm diameter drum of abount 25 cm length. One or two rows of 6-8 mm diameter holes (orifices) at a spacing of 15-20 mm are provided on the drum to discharge the paddy seeds on the field.

I wish to know any empirical or mathematic model exists to determine the flow rate of grains through the holes of the rotating drum. What parameters are required to determine the flow rate ? I have the drum diameter, orifice size, spacing of orifice, grain size, moisture cintent of grain, bulk density, rotating speed of drum, fill of drum as parameters. Kindly suggest

Prasanna

Sorry for the late response.

THe amount of flow through the holes can be determined using discrete element modeling (DEM) code which simulates granular mechanical dynamics and which CDI has (see our website).

This seems to be a probability problem of whenthe seeds will find the holes. If you can induce the seeds to slightly alter their centrifical force and path, during revolving the cylinder, then the amount can be increased if needed for the selected RPM.
