May 27 - 30, 2003

Dear Colleagues,

Maybe most of you still remember well, the pleasant, friendly atmosphere and professional benefits of the First, Second and Third Israeli Conference for Conveying and Handling of Particulate Solids, held in Herzilya - 1995, Jerusalem -1997, and at the Dead Sea – 2000. Although these events were really international, a good idea was raised at the last conference, probably while floating in the warm Dead Sea, to hold the next CHoPS conferences in different countries. It was also decided to change the conference name to "International". The forthcoming event is the first one of these.

After this short backward glance, it is my great pleasure to invite you to participate at the Fourth International Conference for Conveying and Handling of Particulate Solids (CHoPS-4), which will be held on May 27-30, 2003 in Budapest, Hungary. This promises to be a great event, not only from a professional point of view, but also in respect of its marvelous setting in the heart of the Hungarian Capital. The conference itself will take place at an excellent five star hotel, the Inter-Continental, situated on the bank of the Danube with a unique atmosphere and beautiful panorama of the river. The view from the hotel to the green hilltops of Buda, with the silhouette of the imposing Royal Castle and its historical surroundings, is one of the world's most beautiful sights. In addition, there is, of course, the city's famous hospitality and Hungarian cuisine and wines.

The objective of the Conference is to bring together, from all over the world, researchers, engineers and industrialists, who are active in different fields of particle technology. The topics of the conference will be:

- Pneumatic and Mechanical Conveying

- Feeding

- Storage

- Silo Design for Flow and Strength

- Particulate and Slurry Flows

- Classifi cation and Filtration,

- Separation

- Fluidized and Spouted Beds

- Production and Processing

- Nano-and Fine Particles

- Unit Operations

- Crystallization

- Size Enlargement

- Comminution and Attrition

- Mixing and Segregation

- Drying

- Characterization

- Packing Phenomena

- Environmental Aspects

- Dust Explosion

- Measurements and Control

- Fundamentals

- Modeling and Simulation

There will also be 4 planned workshops attached to the Conference:

Dust Control and Explosion Hazards;

Pneumatic Conveying;

Fine Particle Handling - A word of Industrial Application; and

Storage and Flow of Bulk Solids.

The Conference will comprise of 20 invited plenary or keynote lectures given by well-known international experts in their fields, 140 oral lectures running in 4 parallel tracks, together with approximately 100 poster presentations.

Each track is divided into 9 sessions and sub-sessions including workshops for free discussion.

The social program for the participants and accompanying persons is rich and diverse and will include pre- and post conference tours: Exploring a Cultural Delicacy of Budapest and the Danube Bend, Lake Balaton, its surroundings and other sights of the country. Tours for accompanying persons to the great sights of the city including the Royal Castle, the National Gallery and Budapest Spas, will be organized. In the evenings of the Conference it is planned to have a Get Together Reception and a Danube Cruise Dinner which, like the lunches, are offered free of charge, to fully registered participants. Some of the social events are made possible thanks to the

assistance of Conference sponsors, to whom I extend our great appreciation for their support.

I am looking forward to welcoming you in Budapest.
