Complete Handling Systems for Stockyards

Stockyards, either as a circular or longitudinal layout incorporating particularly feed conveyors, stackers and reclaimers, have a central function in the fields of materials handling as they serve as material buffers, reserve or blended storage between incoming and outgoing materials. Due to the main functions buffering, composing and homogenizing performed by a stockyard, quantity as well as quality fluctuations can be balanced out with the right chosen system. As the priorities for each application and stockyard operations are different, it is necessary to consider various questions before selecting type and size: throughput required, characteristics of the materials to be handled, homogenizing effect required, open or roofed storage and importantly, the future upgrading of the storage. Sandvik offers a complete range of products to provide customized solutions for each customer’s specific requirements. The equipment comprises:

• Reclaiming technology for bucket wheel boom type-, bucket wheel bridge type-, scraper type-, drum type units

• Stacking technology for the most commonly used stacking methods Chevron, Windrow and Cone Shell

• Combined stacking/reclaiming technology for bucket wheel- or circular units

• Conveying technology including transfer stations

• Auxiliary equipment with hoppers, feeders, crushers.

Covered storage is used where environmental aspects require the full enclosure of the stockpiles and stacking and reclaiming activities. It can either be arranged in the form of a longitudinal/rectangular configuration or in a circular configuration covered by dometype structures.

Stackers (PS series)

Sandvik stackers effectively stockpile bulk materials in an efficient and orderly manner. Stationary or traveling, borne on rails or crawlers, they can be supplied in fixed, luffable or luffable-andslewable boom designs, with capacities from 150 to 20 000 tonnes per hour. The choice of design depends on factors such as the stacking method and size of the stockpile, the type of material, the required throughput and the demand for mobility. Tripper cars or tripper systems for transferring material from the yard conveyor to the stacker are considered part of the stacker.

Reclaimers (PR series)

Sandvik reclaimers are designed to reclaim bulk materials from stockpiles at mines, ports, steel plants, power stations, etc. in a quick, efficient and orderly way. They are available in several main types, including bucket wheel, scraper and drum-type reclaimers, and in many configurations and sizes, with capacities from 500 to 20 000 tonnes per hour and more. The choice of design depends on factors such as the size and shape of the stockpile, the type of material to be reclaimed, the required reclaiming rate and the need for blending or homogenization.

Stacker/Reclaimers

(PD series)

Sandvik stacker/reclaimers come in two main types: bucketwheel models for alternate stacking and reclaiming, and circular units, which normally stack and reclaim the material alternately but can be designed to do so simultaneously if required. The bucket-wheel models, normally supplied complete with tripper cars, are compact and economical for longitudinal stockyards where simultaneity is not required and where there can be large variations in the demand for stacking and reclaiming capacity. Standard circular units, which build a ring-shaped stockpile and are normally housed inside a covered dome because of environmental aspects, both continually stack the stockpile at one end of the ring and reclaim the material simultaneously from the other end.

Transportation Systems (PC series)

Sandvik has a highly skilled projects division specializing in the design, manufacture,

installation and commissioning of conveyor systems for a full range of applications. We

also upgrade and modernize systems and supply a comprehensive range of quality

components and spare parts.

Some of Sandvik´s Recently Awarded Contracts for Stockyards

• 3 boom-type bucket wheel reclaimers for the PWCS Kooragang Expansion Works, Australia.

• Bulk handling system for Belchatow Power Plant 858 MW, Poland.

• 1 boom-type bucket wheel reclaimer and 2 stackers for Brockman Syncline No. 4 Project, Australia.

• 1 bridge-type bucket wheel reclaimer and 1 stacker for the project ALIMENTAÇO ITM D, Mina Do Pico, Brazil.

• 2 boom-type bucket wheel reclaimers and inplant conveyor for the 130 MTPA Project - Carajs, Brazil.

• Iron ore materials handling equipment (1 boom-type bucket wheel reclaimer, 2 stackers, inplant conveyors and transfer points) for the Port Minralier de Nouadhibou, Mauritania.

Some weeks ago Sandvik was able to extend its range of reclaimers with the supply of a drum-type reclaimer for a steelworks in Gent, Belgium. The unit, which has a capacity of 2,500 tph and a drum diameter of 5.7 m, was handed over to the customer recently and its implementation has been so successful that the site has managed to eliminate virtually all process-related downtime. The drum reclaimer is used as a completely integrated solution for continuously conveying iron ore material to the steelworks nearby. Alongside an existing plant, the reclaimer works on one of two stockpiles, which are alternately reclaimed according to precision-defined quantity requirements. The stockpiles, each with a total length of around 500 meters, are processed in parallel and contain the iron ore in the form of bulk material with a sandy consistency. The specifications include conveying the material to the steelworks in the quantity and composition it needs for steel production.

The steelwork’s final product is sheet steel in the form of coils. The exact quantity of raw material is verified using a belt scale before being used for steel production. The scale provides an optimal flow of material by communicating constantly with the reclaimer’s sophisticated control technology. As a result, the entire system operates unmanned and can work around the clock and 365 days a year to reclaim and feed in the raw material.

At the end of the stockpiles being reclaimed, there is now a smooth changeover from one stockpile to the other while the quantities of transported material are kept constant - and this is a change from previous situations. This helps eliminate the earlier problems with differing discharge angles.

The drum reclaimer built by Sandvik has a total weight of several hundred tons and is designed to handle up to 2500 tons of material per hour. At its heart is a drum with a diameter of 5.7 meters, which is rotated by two 75 kW drives. The motors are controlled by a PowerFlex 700H AC drive from Rockwell Automation with 200 kW nominal output at 400 volts. There is a conveyor belt inside the drum for outgoing material, powered by a PowerFlex 700 (45 kW) AC drive. The drum reclaimer integrates a sophisticated system of mechanical and control components, including the various drive assemblies. The machine’s power is supplied at 6 kV and the voltage is converted to 400V directly at the reclaimer using a transformer. As Wolfgang Bachmayer from Sandvik illustrates: “Most of the motors are equipped with AC drives to allow us to define the rotation speeds and align them with each other, independently of the gears and electrical conditions.”

Alongside the drum, the reclaimer also comprises a special motorized harrow that provides a regular “trickle” of bulk material onto the side of the stockpile as well as optimal blending of the various qualities of raw ore.

Also a few weeks ago Sandvik successfully commissioned an innovative ore handling facility for the extension of “Hadeed´s Oxide Conveyor and Port Facilities“ in Saudi Arabia. The supply included the following equipment: 2 giant ship unloaders (65 t gripping capacity), 4 stackers (3000 tph), 8 hoppers (1200 tph) as well as the modernization of the existing conveyor belt system (3000 tph) on a total length of 15.5 km. Already the first month of operation with the well trained operators have proven a significant increase of performance of the machines by average about more than 15% and further more increased availability and reliability of the port handling equipment - both unloading and to guarantee a smoother running operation of the stockyard.

The completed as well as the awarded contracts for new stockyard systems and machines will once again confirm the client’s confidence in Sandvik and provides the opportunity to demonstrate the performance of the machines and further strengthen the position of Sandvik as a leading supplier of Materials Handling business.

Sandvik Mining and Construction is a business area within the Sandvik Group and a leading global supplier of machinery, cemented-carbide tools, service and technical solutions for the excavation and sizing of rock and minerals in the mining and construction industries.
