Development In Indian Port Sector

Posted in: , on 31. Dec. 2005 - 08:30

The Indian port sector is characterized by 13 major ports and 181 minor ports, which handle more than 90% of the country's foreign trade by volume and 70% by value. The response to government initiatives to attract private and FDI sector participation in the major ports has been very good.

With the advent of the Special Economic Zone policy, it is expected that ports would form an integral part of such efforts and could perhaps be an avenue for sizeable development of this sector. Given such large investment requirements, State Governments have developed framework for private sector and FDI participation in the sector. Several states have made significant progress by setting up Maritime Boards and guidelines for developing private ports. Specific projects for privatisation viz., container terminals, dry cargo births, outer harbours, captive jetties etc. have been identified. Indian ports are currently witnessing capacity constraints with which is expected to worsen with seaborne trade touching 565 mn tones by FY2007. There are expected to be a number of opportunities within this segment estimated at US$ 40 bn over the next five years .The NHAI is considering taking up various projects through the SPV route, including the Ahmedabad-Vadodara Expressway and plans to connect 12 ports including Kandla, Cochin, Paradip, Tuticorin, Haldia, JNPT, Vizag and Marmugao, with an aggregate project cost of Rs 25 bn .

With the above opportunities in this sector, LIBRAN ENGINEERING AND SERVICES has got orders for developing materail handling system, vendor development and costing for dry cargo unloading, handling ,storage and despatch systems. At this moment we are developing such systems with world renowned consultants for three mega upcoming terminals at various ports in India for material like- iron ore, doc, fertilizer, cement, coal and ash.
