Coal Unloaders

Dear All.

We are planning to handle coal of 1.4 MTPA. to handle coal we are planniing for a offshore jetty (1000 m from shore line) to handle coal. As per the calculations a handling rate of 1000 TPH will be sufficient to handle a vessel of 40000 DWT

Will handling coal with gantry grab girder will be economical?

An option of Mobile harbor crane seems to be feasible. pls suggest!!

Any other alternative.. pls suggest.

Also pls specify the handling rate of unloading equipment practically achieved by ship unloaders ?

Dear Andy, There are other options also.Unless you will provide the proper input no one can suggest you a logical solution. Now, as mentioned by you, your offshore jetty is 1 km from shore line,I can understand that you will be getting proper draft for Handymax vessel at that location

Since, I do not know the sea conditions(current, waves) ect. around that area, I could have suggested a floating crane for this installation(if the area is protected by breakwaters or very less disturbance). With this option either you can unload you 40000 t vessel on self unloading barges with floating crane(saving the cost of deck and 1 km long jetty) or unload the vessel by floating crane on the mobile hoppers installed on the deck and then convey it to shore by 1 km long conveyor. This floating crane, you can give on rent if there is no vessel.

One of the options is - to installed fixed pedestal crane/cranes on the jetty instead of MHC or Grab cranes since they are very costly and have more loadings on deck as compare to fixed crane/cranes.

Dear Mr. Andy,

Unloading rate of 1000 mtph for coal is well within the range of various ship unloaders. You can have grab bucket type ship unloader or continuous type of ship unloaders, as per your preference.

A mobile crane with a grab and mobile hopper can be more flexible than a continuous. And you can always use different grabs for different materials or even just put a hook on the crane.

Before you can consider options you need to clarify your intent.

You state that the jetty is being built to handle coal. So why would you need a general cargo crane?

You are building a jetty anyway so why would you need a floating crane and hoppers feeding a conveyor on the fixed jetty?

How much would self unloading barges cost? Where would they self unload?

Handymax vessels are usually geared anyway.

Fixed pedestal cranes would have to reach from the stern to forecastle holds which for a Handymax is quite a distance. How many cranes can you afford?

But you can provide better availability with multiple machines.

The list is endless so far...better go to a real expert.

Today coal, tomorrow who knows... I've seen quite a few UK installations change their commodity.

Where did the floating crane come from?
