Shredding of refuse-derived fuels

The disposal system ECOWEST-Entsorgungsverbund Westfalen GmbH, Ennigerloh, Germany has just put a PowerLine 3000 from WEIMA Maschinenbau GmbH, Ilsfeld, Germany into regular operation at its Ennigerloh location. The machine is used for final shredding of pre-shredded industrial waste into refuse-derived fuels (RDF). The company works in 2-3 shift operations, depending on the composition of the material, with throughput of 12 15 t/h with sieve perforation of 65 mm.

The PowerLine range of shredders is used, depending on the material to be shredded, in multi-stage plants for initial and subsequent shredding processes. The machine at ECOWEST has working width of 3,000 mm, together with rotor diameter of 800 mm. Reversible knives in a special through-tempered tool-quality steel and with edge lengths of 80mm x 80mm are fitted around the full extent of the rotor, enabling extremely long lifetime of 250-300 hours before reversal or a replacement of the blade is required. Exchangeable armouring of the rotor guarantees a high degree of protection and enables lifetime of several tens of thousands of hours.

The shredder is equipped with direct drive of power rating of 350 kW. The speed is controlled continuously up to approx. 170 rpm via a frequency converter, whereby low operation with low levels of both noise and dust is ensured. A safety coupling between the direct drive and the rotor of the 35 tonnes heavy machine prevents disturbance in the event of unintended feeding of a large amount of contaminating material.
