TAIM-TFG BUILDS THE NEW RAW MATERIAL LOADING SYSTEM FOR THE SIDOR STEELWORKS IN VENEZUELA

SIDOR, the main iron and steel company in Venezuela, which belongs to the Ternium group, has chosen TAIM-TFG to undertake two facilities that are a vital part of the company’s current expansion process. TAIM-TFG’s work commenced in September 2006 and is expected to be completed towards the end of 2008.

SIDOR, the leading iron and steel company in Venezuela, recently undertook a major expansion process of its facilities in the city of Puerto Ordaz. With this in mind, the company decided to use the experience and knowledge of TAIM-TFG, which since September 2006 has been working on the construction of a new calcined lime and DRI feeding system for the furnaces in the slab steelworks.

SIDOR’s complete iron and steel complex is in the city of Puerto Ordaz, in the Matanzas industrial zone, state of Bolvar, Venezuela, on the right bank of the River Orinoco. It has a surface area of 2,200 hectares. For steel production, SIDOR uses Direct Reduction and Electric Arc Furnaces, representing one the largest complexes of this kind in the world.

Over recent years, the major increase in liquid steel production capacity at this plant has prompted the company to redesign its facilities, with the aim of producing 4.5 million tons of liquid steel per year.

The main objectives of these new facilities for which TAIM-TFG will be responsible are firstly, to avoid bottlenecks in the furnace raw material loading and feeding system, secondly, to ensure that the calcined lime arrives inside the plant in the best condition possible, avoiding its degradation, and finally, to allow more flexibility for maintenance of the steelwork.

Two facilities required for the plant’s growth

TAIM-TFG’s work to increase the steelworks’ raw material transport capacity consists of two different facilities. The first is a new DRI and calcined lime receiving, storage and transport circuit for the slab steelworks furnaces. The circuit has a 600 t/h transport capacity, 800 mm belt width, and the conveyor belts have a total length of 1,250 m. This facility also includes a new large calcined lime handling yard, which includes wagon / truck unloading station from the calcination plant, extraction using plough feeders and subsequent connection to the feeding circuit using belt conveyors and 2 trippers to feed the hoppers inside the steelworks, which can distribute material to the 16 hoppers that supply the furnaces. This is one of the most complex jobs because it is carried out with the steelworks in full operation.

Secondly, in the same Puerto Ordaz plant TAIM-TFG will redesign part of the DRI handling system using a by-pass of the current belt conveyor system. This facility is 350 metres long and has a 1,200 t/h transport capacity. The aim is to avoid passage through an old dismantled screening plant, thereby improving the product quality in terms of its grain size, as well as to increase the capacity and flexibility of the existing raw material loading system.

These two facilities on which the company from Zaragoza is currently working will be completed by the end of 2008 and will allow SIDOR to attain the production rates expected in the near future.

TAIM-TFG, S.A. was set up in 1973 following the merger of two companies, TAIM, S.A. and TFG, S.A., founded in 1953 and 1899 respectively.
