Clean technologies for the new Techint continuous shipunloader at Savona

The hand over ceremony of the new “Alti Fondali” receiving and handling bulk material sea terminal was celebrated in Savona, at the presence of Claudio Burlando, President of the Liguria Region on the last July 20th. Cristoforo Canavese, President of the Savona Port Authority, Gianluigi Nova Managing Director of Techint Technologies and Alberto Dardano, Director of the Material Handling Techint Business Unit, highlighted the main features of this innovative infrastructure, one of the most technologically advanced Mediterranean terminals.

The “Alti Fondali” project is an important interchange terminal for minerals (such as iron, bauxite and coal) carried in bulk carriers. “The terminal - explains Gianluigi Nova, - will be used to unload minerals from ships and loading them on trains and trucks bound for northern Italy. In future, we expect to enlarge and develop the huge potential of this terminal”.

The plant supplied by Techint Technologies comprises a 2,000 t/h environmental-friendly continuous shipunloader for ships ranging from 10,000 to 120,000 DWT which is capable of handling minerals with different chemical and physical characteristics; 7 concrete caissons (each holding approximately 10,000 cubic metres) on the quayside fitted with moving covers to be used as intermediate storage facility; a conveyor belt system and a loading station for trains and trucks.

One 2000 tph stacker is located above the caissons to feed them with different types of bulk materials. The minerals are then transported along conveyor belts from the intermediate storage to the distribution tower, which sends them to railway wagons, trucks or other system of conveyor belts feeding the new base station of the cableway to the Cairo Montenotte storage facility in the hinterland of Savona.

“The winning feature of the Techint Technologies project – added Alberto Dardano - is the fact that it minimises environmental impact, a critical aspect seeing how close the city is to the plant. The concrete caissons, for example, are closed with mobile covers in order to seal the ones that are not involved in loading or unloading activities, thereby reducing powder emissions to a minimum. All the conveyor belts are totally covered for the same reason. Additionally, the noisiest parts of the plant have all been suitably soundproofed.

The plant just started up will replace the old terminal opened in 1912.
