Weights Reconciliation

hi there, need some advice...

how do you reconcile weights of shipped and leftover concentrate weights? as a background, our filter presses uses a weigher/load cell system that is not "payment based". the weights registered on the weighers is what we use on our daily reports for filtered products and consequently, the resulting inventory. when shipment comes, draft survey weight is our basis for the final weight and this final weight is what we use to deduct from our inventory. to check if we really have the correct weights on our inventory, we then perform a survey on the pile and upon using a bulk density figure, we then come up with a weight, but with a big discrepancy. (weights from survey is lesser than the calculated weight)

my question then is, are we using the correct procedure on reconciling our inventory weights? thanks in advance for any feedback..

Voltron,

The problem you described is very common in coal fired power plants as well. The problem can also be compounded when there are a number of inputs and outputs to the stockpile. Most power plants perform stockpile inventories using drill rigs, pile surveys and aerial fly overs once or twice a year. These surveys are used to check the entire system. The plants that I work with try to keep the survey vs. book inventory numbers within 1 to 2%. Most are also using an automatic sampling system to check quality and density as well. To keep the scales in line with real life, you may want to perform a material test on your belt scales, even if they are not basis of payment.

hi todd,

thanks for the advice.

we are already planning on buying a payment based weightometer instead but we may need to revise our reporting procedures for our inventories
