All the materials mentioned are hygroscopic so it would be helpful to know what precautions are in place to enable flow out of the silos in the first place. Moisture content will vary temporarily and locally within the ensiled materials due to the effects of solar radiation intensity.

Please provide information about the upstream process handling system to enable forum members to provide a balanced suggestion. For instance, what is the formation of the silos. Filling a shaded silo with a different product may require very sophisticated instrumentation if you need to do the job properly. Please also mention the downstream quality control regime if you are mixing detergent locally. ■

Residence time is storage can only be assessed accurately if the silos work in mass flow and generate a coherent drawdown, which usually means that the working level stays above the hip unless the converging section discharges completely. Silo content weighing will then provide knowledge of the amount entered and leaving in sequence for calculating the residence time. With a funnel flow regime the task is hopeless unless all the contents are discharged at the same time. ■
