Likert Scales --> Averaging different scales (4-point & 5-point)

Hi!

I've got a problem. I am doing the stats for a professor at my uni. However this professor used for some constructs both 4-point AND 5-point scales for different items for that construct.

Now I have the problem, if I want to average them (yes I know there are other ways than averaging, but my professor wants to do it that way...), as the distance between 1-2 in the 4-point scale is larger than between 1-2 in the five point scale.

How could I come up with a compound scale for these two items with different scales (4-point versus 5-point)?

Thank you a lot! YOu would really help me a lot!

Distance-Weighted Average

If one knows the reading for each of the four or five load cells, one may derive not only the weighted average load for each scale but also the variance of the weighted average load. One would expect a 5-point scale to be more precise than a 4-point scale. The question is then whether or not 5-point scales are significantly more precise than 4-point scales. JanWMerks
