Self is studying various options on Solid Waste Mangement for adoption by Muncipalities.

The technologies tried have been :

- Composting

- Vermiculture

- Bio Gas

- Incineration

Now a new technology has been proposed i.e Pyrolysis. I invite comments and suggestions on this Technology on its Commercial viability/Environment issue/Success stories elsewhere etc.

Pyrolysis is process which is mostly used in chemical industrie. It is occur at very high tempreture and in the absence of oxygen.

Can you pl elaborate how this technology is used in Chemical plants and its advantage. rgds

Despite its advantages I can tell one significant disadvantage: toxic emissions which will have major impact on ground water

Dear Sir,

Groundwater would get contaminated only if Solid waste were to be re-cycled on ground just as in Bio composting. Composting would generate liquid Leachate which would be lead to contamination of Ground water. Also, the Muncipal Solid waste invariably carries toxic waste such as Bio Medical waste, Batteries, CFL bulbs, Paint etc. which can contaminate Ground water with Heavy metals, even after Composting.

Re-cylcing by Pyrolysis is a closed process taking place in Fabricated vessels with Fly ash being the final Waste product. Fly ash can be used for Brick manufacturers or by Ready Mix Concrete suppliers.

Toxic emissions in air is possible due to Pyrolysis. Request somebody to throw more light on this aspect.
