Correct Vibratory Motor for Screen

Hi all

Just wondering if you can help me, I want to build a small screener that I plan to sell once I have the final proto type finished.

I want some advice on the correct motor for the screen.

Screen is 48 inches in length

the amount of load for it to move will be about 120 pounds

and the total weight I would say of the deck, screen and load would be about 150 pounds.

This machine is going to be marketed mainly toward the small plant nurseries and landscaping sector hence the size being small and affordable.

Hello,

It seems your query pertains to motor size, which also depends upon tray width and capacity tonnes per hour which you have not mentioned. The tray width possibly may be around 22 inch. The motor hp is likely to be small. Some collateral information is as below, which may be also of interest to you.

1) Finer screening requires higher frequency and comparatively smaller amplitude (stroke). As against this coarse screening requires lesser frequency and comparatively larger amplitude (stroke).

2) You can create vibration by 2 means. A) Rotary shaft along with unbalanced mass (2 nos.), fitted below the tray. This shaft is driven by stationary motor and V-belt drive. B) The special vibration duty motor (fitted with unbalanced mass on motor/s shaft) and fitted directly to the tray.

3) The aforesaid arrangement A) does not need vibration duty motor. The arrangement is likely to be economical, easy to maintain without dependence of motor availability. The arrangement B) will need vibration duty motor, will be compact and probably more in price if quantity to be manufactured is small.

4) The arrangement will require small feed hopper (material receiving receptacle), feeding to the tray.

5) Looking to the material (organic manure ?), you may be handling, sometime be prepared for repeat screening 2 - 3 times, if observed screening is not adequate for particular lot of material if it happens to be screening resistant due to its nature, moisture, etc.

6) Motor electric power supply can be VVFD, to select operational speed (within range), for best result to tackle with the observed situation.

The readers who have first hand experience of such application, will have more specific information.

Hello Tony,

The simplest dumbest screener you can make for your self is a horizontal screener

to do the work of screening top soil, mulch, and compost which is apparently the

market you are pursuing.

Candidly you will find it hard to compete with the smaller portable wheeled trommel

screeners available and on the market today as they are a two cut screener-meaning

the first cut is the size of material that passes through the trommel screen and the

second cut is either oversize or junk/waste that has to be sifted out.

Horizontal screeners operate with an electric motor with or without a reduction gear box with a

V belt final drive that rotates large belt pulleys which move a cam and arm assembly that moves

the screen in forward and reverse.

The horizontal screen deck rides on four or more steel wheels that ride inside channel iron frame.

The horizontal screener also provides a finer cut of material at a lower speed as well you can place

several screens one behind the other from smallest to largest to screen material as is

done in older anthracite coal washing and screen plants.

Please visit you tube and type in coal breakers and you will have a wealth of material

in these videos to watch.

You need to know(you may already know this) that these landscapers and buy much of this material

already screened and sized as a rule from gravel pits and wood waste processors that screen thier

material while crushing or grinding it to the final size.

It is going to come down to how much someone is willing to pay for a small portable screener when

small trommel screens are already for sale which are stationary and lef the user just shovel the material

into the screen and the sized material just falls through the screen openings/sieve size.
