Non Contact Continuous Level Measurement

Principle of Operation

A radiation based measurement system consists of 2 basic components: the source holder and nuclear detector. The source holder emits a pattern of gamma radiation that is sized to pass through the vessel walls, and any other obstruction, the changing level of the measured product will attenuate the beam.

The detector measures the amount, or the presence or absence, of the radiation it receives. A detector with integral transmitter converts this amount into a useful analogue signal such as 4-20mA or Fieldbus Digital output proportional to a process variable such as level / interface.

Typical Applications:

  • LDPE and HDPE vessels
  • Wood chip chutes
  • Chemical storage
  • Flash vessels
  • Scrubbers
  • Reactor vessels
  • Catalyst level
  • Fractionator towers
  • Separators
  • Coke Drum level

Our rigid scintillation detectors offer the higher sensitivity needed for special applications or can extend the life of existing systems.

The uniquely flexible Fiberflex detector can bend to fit a vessel reducing the number of €˜rigid€™ detectors and, in some cases, sources, needed for measurement. Especially on contoured vessels increasing safety and reducing costs.

Non Contact Point Level Detection

Principle of Operation

Nucleonic point level systems use a focused beam of radiation directed at a small detector mounted on the opposite side of the vessel. The detector senses the presence or absence of the beam.

When the product or process blocks the beam, an alarm can be generated. The switch can be set for high or low level operation and is easily calibrated using a simple push-button set-up.

Typical Applications:

  • Blockage Detection in hoppers and chutes
  • Level Detection for hazardous processes involving toxic or dangerous conditions
  • Liquid high level, low level and presence detection in pipes

The GM 17 level switch uses Geiger Meuller tube technology with multiple tubes for superior sensitivity. This security of measurement means smaller source sizes and optimum performance.

Non Contact Density / Mass Flow Measurement

Principle of Operation

Nucleonic density gauges send a focused beam of radiation from the source holder to a detector mounted on the opposite side of the process pipe or vessel.

As the density within the pipe increases, the energy reaching the detector progressively decreases and therefore process density can be calculated.

The integral HART® transmitter in the detector is pre-programmed with a density linearisation curve. Therefore it can be commissioned easily with single-point or two-point calibration. The optional flow meter input enables the density gauge to calculate the mass flow in pipes with diameters from 50 mm to 1000 mm.

Other Measurement possibilities with density systems

Density Compensated with Process Temperature Measurement

The transmitter can have input from a temperature probe, allowing the density to be calculated to a reference process temperature.

Bulk Density Measurements

For many solids and powders, density measurements are possible. These applications require an area where the powder is flowing, but not packed, for example a feed chute or small hopper.

Percent Solids Measurement

When the carrier fluid remains stable, nuclear density gauges provide highly accurate measurements of percent solids for most slurries.

Mass Flow Measurement

When used in conjunction with an input from a suitable flow meter nuclear density gauges provide on line mass flow monitoring.

Non Contact Continuous Weighing Systems

Principle of Operation

Nucleonic weighing systems consist of a sealed radioactive source and a detector mounted in a frame assembly. The frame is non-contact and is mounted around the conveyor. The source holder is in the frame above the conveyor, and it directs a focused beam of radiation to the detector mounted below. As the weight in the conveyor increases, the energy reaching the detector will decrease, hence weight can be calculated. The system can provide an output of Mass flow (e.g. tonnes per hour) using either a fixed speed conveyor or an analogue speed input signal from the conveyor.

Typical Applications:

  • Drag conveyors
  • Screw conveyors
  • Belt conveyors
  • Bucket conveyors

Non contact measurement for conveyors, which provides a highly repeatable and reliable measurement especially when installed in the rugged environment. For screw, drag and bucket conveyors, this format is the only true method for non contact, in-line measurement without using intermediate machinery or belt weighing, useful when space is at a premium.

VEGA Radar Technology - Now Also For Bulk Solids

Worldwide success with radar

VEGA Grieshaber is a world-leading company of level, switching and pressure instrumentation. In 1997 VEGA introduced the world€™s first two-wire radar sensor.

Two years later, VEGA advanced to international market leader in the area of radar level measurement.

Radar has become widely accepted as the reliable standard technology for measurement of liquids €“ and with the radar instruments of Era II, VEGA has set a new standard for radar in continuous level measurement of bulk solids.

How it all began: the eric® radar story

The most successful radar level measuring instrument in the world is called eric®. In 1997 this instrument revolutionised the market and within a very short time became international market leader in the area of level measurement with radar technology. As the first 2-wire radar instrument, eric® combined easy handling with high process reliability. Since 2003 eric® has been available in the compact housing of the plics® modular system. Today, eric® represents Era II of reliable bulk solids measurement.

Optimum technology for level measurement of bulk solids

The technology: advanced VEGA radar with optimised signal processing.

The two instruments: the universal VEGAPULS 67 and the extremely robust VEGAPULS 68.

All bulk solids: where until now compromise solutions were necessary due to extreme dust generation, unfavourable material surface geometry, filling noise and difficult installation conditions, VEGAPULS 67 and VEGAPULS 68 are the ideal solution.

A complete range of radar products

From the most demanding application conditions to areas where radar was simply too expensive until now: VEGAPULS solves any problem.

Thanks to its high reliability, VEGAPULS 68 gives a convincing performance under extreme conditions and is thus the radar specialist for the toughest of applications.

VEGAPULS 67 was developed for measurement problems that up to now were solved mainly with ultrasound technology. Here, VEGAPULS offers superior measurement reliability at very low instrument cost.

VEGAPULS 67 and VEGAPULS 68: for all bulk solid applications

  • Non-contact measurement, therefore wear and maintenance-free
  • Unaffected by dust generation
  • No signal loss during pneumatic filling
  • Not influenced by filling noise
  • Reliable measurement due to wide dynamic range
  • Dust Ex approval
  • Gas Ex approval

VEGAPULS 67: The Newcomer in the VEGA Team

Radar reliability at entry level price

Before there was VEGAPULS 67, ultrasonics was implemented in many cases just for price reasons. If contactless level measurement was required, the system deficiencies of ultrasonics had to be accepted perforce. VEGAPULS 67 puts an end to these compromises and provides radar technology at ultrasonic prices.

Where ultrasonic measurement fails

Like all radar technologies, VEGAPULS 67 operates contactlessly and is therefore suitable for abrasive and corrosive products. Unaffected by air turbulence and noise, it delivers reliable measurement values even during pneumatic filling. Pressure and extreme dust generation also have no effect. VEGAPULS 67 is thus suitable for practically all areas of production.

  • Measuring range up to 15 m
  • Pressure up to 2 bar
  • Temperatures up to 80 °C

Optimised radar signal processing for bulk solids

Because the typical uneven surfaces of bulk materials in silos generate different echo signals than liquid surfaces, the evaluation algorithms of VEGAPULS have been adapted to different reflection characteristics. Through the implementation of practice-oriented application parameters, the user has only to make a few basic adjustments to adapt the sensor to a particular application.

VEGAPULS 68: The specialist for extreme application Conditions

Heat, dust, height: elegantly overcome

VEGAPULS 68€™s application range also covers the most extreme level measuring conditions in bulk solids. The instrument delivers reliable level data even under high temperatures, such as in steel production. Dusty conditions in power plant coal processing facilities or in building material storehouses do not bother VEGAPULS 68 in the least. The wide dynamic range of the sensor also opens up new possibilities for applications with powders and granulates in the food and chemical industries.

Very high sensitivity through improved technology

Thanks to optimised VEGA radar technology, the sensor of VEGAPULS can process signals up to a thousand times smaller than those normally handled by conventional radar instruments. This high sensitivity enables measuring ranges up to 70 m, even for products with poor reflection characteristics.
