Dust Collection Problem

As you can see in the photo below there are 2 belt conveyors which move powder ( potassium chloride) from the top Conveyor to the bottom one. The Belt is 600 mm wide, speed 2 m/sec , capacity running on belt is 180 ton/hour , size of powder is 0.4 mm, powder mass for sq meter 1100 kg, while pouring the powder from one belt to the other dust flies all around and get out from the openings available (the whole are of transfer is covered as seen with metal cover, the size of the dust is 100 µm & below .

This dust creates heavy environmental issue.

Please offer a suitable solution which will allow to add the filtered dust back to the conveyor. easy to handle and long life operated.

Thanks in advance.

Dust Collection Problem

The first thing to do is provide skirting rubbers on the lower conveyor. Extend the cover on the lower conveyor at least 3 belt widths past the chute. Fit rubber curtains inside the lower cover as well as at the exit. Fit a rubber curtain behind the chute, near the tail pulley.

2000 cu.m/h would be enough for a narrow belt and if the height difference is not too great.

Obtain a copy of "Industrial Ventilation" published by The American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists. This will tell you all you need to know.

An 'insertable' filter, installed as you show, will collect the dust and prevent its escape but will put it back on the conveyor so that it becomes a problem again at the next transfer (or discharge point). There will also be a dump of dust when the dust filter stops.

Please find the solution on our website www.clevelandcascades.co.uk These systems can be used in transfer stations as well as other material handling situations.

That is a very common problem that we encounter.

The first ting to do is to take an air flow reading. This can be done by placing an anemometer at the outlet of the transfer chute. This will give an average air velocity. This is then multiplied by the area of the outlet to find a total air flow. The collector required will have to be slightly larger than the airflow generated to create a negative pressure within the chute.

Once that has been calculated, an Insertable can be sized from

http://www.martin-eng.com/products/m...dust-collector

We can size this collector from calculated airflows, but it does not take into account all of the variables in a transfer point, so a measured solution is the best. Based on your information, I was not able to calculate the airflow without the drop height. The height of the drop has a great impact on the air (and dust) generated.

We have a rep in Israel and I am forwarding this application to him.

There is many variales to considder.

Drop Height

Actual execution - design of drop shute

Have the problem always existed?

Does the existing dust collection device work properly? (do you have specifications)

The more details the better.

You are welcome to contact us

I agree with Michael Reid's advice. This may even improve the control at Conv.A discharge. If it does not, you may need to install a smaller Insertible Filter on Conv.A discharge hood with similar modification to the hood as suggested by "Industrial Ventilation".

It is rather important to design the transfer points with large ( high and long )hoods to provide surge volume for displacement air and thus reduce the presure build up in the hood that causes the dust leak. The pressure build up in the hoods are directly proportional with the ratio of displacement air to hood volume.

There is now an improved design, low profile, low cost Insertible Filters using a new technology called "POWER-CORE" are available in the market. Please indicate the difference in height between two belts and also the belt speed.
