India’s largest open-pit mine embraces

Biggest Sandvik-designed Bucket Wheel Excavators and Beltwagons

Sandvik’s Materials Handling team proudly announces the turning over to Neyveli Lignite Mines of the biggest bucket wheel excavator ever designed by Sandvik, along with beltwagons of 11000 tph capacity after a successful Take over Test (TOT). Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC), an Indian government-owned corporation, operates the biggest open-pit mechanized lignite mine in India, producing 24 million tonnes of lignite annually, and generating power with an installed capacity of 2490 mW of power. NLC has been engaged in the extraction of lignite from deposits for more than four decades and is a major producer of thermal power in southern India.

In the first quarter of 2005, Sandvik was awarded contracts by NLC for the design, manufacture, supply, erection and commission of seven large machines, as follow:

• 3 bucket wheel excavators of 1400 liters (370 gallons) bucket capacity and 34m (37 yards) boom length

• 1 bucket wheel excavator of 700 liters (185 gallons) bucket capacity and 30m (33 yards) boom length

• 3 beltwagons of 11000 tph capacity, 35m (38 yards) long receiving boom and 45m (49 yards) long discharge boom.

Sandvik’s portion of the contract value was approximately EUR 34 million (US$ 52 million), and the total scope of the project included basic and detailed designs, a static design, obtaining approvals for designs by independent auditors, the supply of all drive components and other key components from overseas, and supervision of erecting and commissioning.

In July 2007, Sandvik commissioned the first beltwagon with two more beltwagons in the third quarter of 2007. All designing, including the static design of these beltwagons, was entrusted to the Sandvik design team in Pune, India. All the drives, except the crawler and slew drives, and other mechanical components were also supplied from Pune. It is a matter of pride and great satisfaction to the young and growing team at Pune that a client such as NLC is extremely happy with the performance of these machines. These beltwagons are primarily used in conjunction with bucket wheel excavators, crawlermounted tripper cards, and spreaders for overburden removal. They are also operating in the lignite bench for the transfer operation.

At the end of January 2008, the first 1400 liter bucket wheel excavator was inaugurated by the Chairman of NLC during an official function. It was a proud moment for the entire Pune team to see their creation come to life! This bucket wheel excavator, the biggest ever designed by Sandvik globally, is a mammoth machine having a weight of approximately 2500 tons. The entire machine is supported on six crawlers propelled by 6 x 90-kW drives.

The 10.5m (34.5 feet) diameter bucket wheel has 14 buckets having capacities of 1400 liters (370 gallons) each. The theoretical capacity of the machine is 5460 cubic meters/hr (7141 cubic yards/hr) with a bank density of 2 t/cubic meter (1.6 t/cubic yard).

The bucket wheel is driven by 2 x 750-kW motors. For smooth transfer of the material from the bucket wheel onto the boom conveyor, a rotary plate arrangement is provided.

The discharge boom with a relative slewing range of ± 105 degrees to the bucket wheel boom aids in the transfer of the excavated material either to the shiftable conveyor or to the beltwagon. The bucket wheel boom and discharge boom each have a length of 34m

(37 yards) each.

The designing of such a giant bucket wheel excavator, which involves so many mechanisms and components subjected to dynamic loads of bucket wheel digging forces and crawler movements, is never an easy task. Dedicated efforts from Sandvik design engineers in Austria and the detailed engineering support from the Pune design team efficiently handled the daunting task of meeting the customer’s demanding design/performance requirements within the overall project schedule.

Here again the key drives and major mechanical components were supplied from overseas with the conveyor drive and hoist drive components coming from India.

Erection of such a big machine requires highly talented skills and an experienced approach with total commitment.

Sandvik supervisors have shown excellent dexterity and dedication to meet this challenge. This combined team effort is truly a commendable job and deserves full appreciation.

The journey for Sandvik with NLC started several years ago with the supply of two transport crawler units in 2000, with the supply of two crawler-mounted spreader units with a discharge boom length of 60m (65 yards) and three beltwagons of 4420 cubic meters/hour (5781 cubic yards/hour) coming shortly after. NLC renewed their confidence by awarding three additional beltwagons in 2002. With the addition of these seven new machines the total number of Sandvik units in NLC mines amounts to 16 in a span of eight years! This certifies the growing customer confidence in the capabilities of Sandvik

to design and deliver such huge mining machines.

Sandvik is a global industrial group with advanced products and world-leading positions in selected areas - tools for metal cutting, machinery and tools for rock excavation, stainless materials, special alloys, metallic and ceramic resistance materials as well as process systems.
