K-Tron International Ranks 19th in

Forbes Magazine’s “200 Best Small Companies” in America

PITMAN, NJ (December 5, 2007) – Forbes Magazine ranks K-Tron International 19th on its list of “The 200 Best Small Companies” in America. The October 29, 2007 issue of Forbes profiles its top 200 publicly traded companies by rank, and includes sales revenues, five-year averages in sales growth, earnings per share growth, and share market value. The feature story also includes an article on K-Tron CEO Ed Cloues.

The article describes how Cloues, a former Mergers & Acquisitions lawyer at Morgan, Lewis & Bockius in Philadelphia, “keeps this outfit humming” by transforming it into a true global business and making a number of key acquisitions. Starting as a small maker of pneumatic scales in Pitman, NJ, in 1949, K-Tron now has wholly owned operations in the U.S., Switzerland, the U.K., Germany, France, China and Singapore.

K-Tron has long been known for its feeder business, and this article describes how Cloues, who became chief executive in 1998, took K-Tron into the Size Reduction business with acquisitions of Pennsylvania Crusher and Gundlach. “Ed is like Warren Buffett — if it isn’t a fat pitch, he won’t swing,” Preston Athey of T. Rowe Price told Forbes reporter Zack O’Malley Greenburg.

In order to qualify for the “Top 200” list, companies must pass a stringent review process. Candidates were selected from those public companies with revenues of $5 million to $750 million and share prices of above $5 per share as of October 1st, 2007. Each company must have a sustained sales and net profit growth over both 12-month and five year periods.

According to Forbes, “it takes more than solid books to make the cut”. If a company has too much debt, any signs of an impending financial downturn in the future, or even present or potential legal problems, they are disqualified. Several companies that made the “Top 200” list last year did not make the list this year. This year, seven companies are new to the list, with K-Tron International being one of them.
