Magnetite Handling Plant
Subject: Magnetite Handling
Dear Sir,
I am Technical Advisor to the Executive Director of CFM – Mozambique Ports & Railways the public company that owns and operates the system in Mozambique – Southern Africa.
I apologize for this email but we are evaluating the possibility of upgrading or construct a new magnetite ore handling plant at our Port of Matola – Maputoport.com. This is still in the very early stages and I wonder if you can help on giving some light to our intention and keep this information as confidential as possible.
Attached we present a picture of the existing plant, originally (1964) was designed for hematite and is now dedicated to coal handling. It is currently used for marginal exports of magnetite – last year only Tons went through.
It is intended to grow the exports to a level of 360,000 MT/ Month in the near future on a new facility for which the basic bulk handling system shall comprise at least:
One tippler with automatic car indexer and associated structures capable of handling 35 wagons/ Hour;
A 1,600 or 2,500 TPH, 1200 mm two speed Stacking and Reclaiming conveyor system;
Two off 2,500 TPH, bucket wheel type traveling, slewing Stacker/ Reclaimer;;
360 – 400,000 Tones storage area, 100 M wide x 800 M long; pile height of 16 – 18 M
A 1,600 / 2,500 TPH, 1,200 mm transfer conveyor system with incoming and outgoing automatic weighing equipment;
An offshore transfer station to accommodate vessels up to 80,000 DWT, with:
1,200 mm shiploader approach conveyor
2,500 MTH Linear Shiploader;
All electrical distribution and control system as required for the materials handling facility
Marine construction comprises:
one ruble fill causeway for vehicular access to the shiploading berth;
caisson breasting structures and mooring dolphins;
runaway girders and supports;
shiploader turntable;
fender system;
and ships service pipeline and power supply
Besides expected and non resolved details on wagon tipping (magnetite tends to stick to wagon walls, and may be vibrator system might be required), at this stage I am looking for basic information that will allow knowledge on:
§ costing off:
o wagon tippler and associated car indexer
o stacker reclaimers
o shiploader
o conveyor belt system: 100 M; 200 M; 500 M; or 1,000 M long; 1,600 / 2,500 TPH
o weighing equipment
Power requirements (p. u.) for above systems
I would appreciate if you can also provide a tentative time schedule from contract award to testing and commissioning of the plant.

CFM - Matola Port – Expansion of Ore Handling Terminal
(The extension did not come on the picture (although it was clear in the drawing). It should have been converted to PDF file (printed with Acrobat Distiller) prior to the posting. But if you cannot do it at this stage it serves to mention only that the extension will be on East side of the existing Coal Terminal, with:
• Storage area next to the rail departure yard
• Shiploader established on the two existing dolphins that will be complemented with two ones sufficiently for a 80,000 DWT vessel mooring and breasting.)
