Re: Pipe Conveyor Horizontal Radius
Good morning,
that is what we say too - 300x dia; but for sure it depends on the angle. Metso, a supplier of pipe conveyor belts, says the following:
angle <25° 300...400 x dia
25°< angle <50° 400...500 x dia
50°< angle <75° 500...600 x dia
75°< angle <100° 600...700 x dia
We have also done Pipe Conveyors with smaller Radii than given here. It depends on the exact situation (e.g. Pipe Length, position of the curve - S-curves, ...). But 300x dia should be the very minimum. I remember a Pipe Conveyor dia200 we did with a R=68m-curve and an angle of 80°. In such cases you just should now your belt supplier. Not all are able to make a fitting belt.

Re: Pipe Conveyor Horizontal Radius
300d is a good starting point. Remember the smaller the radius the greater the idler load to restrain the belt. Good design would suggest using larger radii if space permits. Send me an email at loeeng@austin.rr.com and I will forward you a paper. ■
Re: Pipe Conveyor Horizontal Radius
Hello
Yes 300 x D is a good starting point but we have installed some with less even 200D and it sometimes requires mechanical perameter modifications depending on the location on the system.

Pipe Conveyor Horizontal Radius
Dear ashbhatnagar,
300 to 500 x Dia = Radius is only a rule of thumb. The proper radius has to be calculated and is depending on belt tension at that point, belt modulus, inside elongation vs. outside elongation, buckling of belt as result of a too small radius, additional pretension and some more considerations. ■
Pipe Conveyor Horizontal Radius
Dear Mr. Ash,
Mr.Ingolf of TKRI is very correct, but he did not mention the type of fabric. The same is correct for NN belting. But for steel cord belting it is little higher as per BRIDGESTONE.

Re: Pipe Conveyor Horizontal Radius
From the perspective of a belt manufacturer, if the radius is smaller than the suggested, the belts will tend to experience the following:
1. Ply separation due to elongation and compresion at both side
2. Cracking of the cover rubber due to excessive bending
Over the years, we have seen many pipe conveyor system that did not follow the thumb of rule but suffering from shorter belt life.
The company may have paid lesser for the system design but will have to bear with the cost of belt changeout for a long period of time.
Therefore, my suggestion is to work with a reputable system designer and get the advice of a reputable belt manufacturer for the design of the belt. ■
Steel Cord Belt Versus Fabric
Hi,
it is important as well to specify what kind of belt is used. For steel cord belts we usually use a somewhat larger radius than for belts with a fabric ply. Moreover the belt construction is important, which means for instance for how long the belt whithstands the lateral forces in a curve whithout loosing its round shape.

Pipe Conveyor Horizontal Radius
As per the normal practice the horizontal curve radius is 300 times the pipe diameter.
Does it hold good for any included angle?
Experts in the field are requested to pl enlighten the forum by sharing their theoritical and practicle experience.
