Crawler Excavator vs Wheel Loader

Hi to everyone!

In our quarry we are using wheel loaders Komatsu WA 500 - 6 for loading raw material (dolomit) into damp trucks. Well, in the future, we want to buy crawler excevator for the same purpose. Beside that, we will use excevator for tehnical recovery. But we don't have experience with crawler excevators.

Does anyone know advantages and disadvantages of crawler excevators. In basic.

Hello Davor Rudar,

About crawler excavators as a group:

Starting at the very beginning;

Your mining plan will determine

the size of the crawler excavator

in real terms for you in very plain detail.

If you are stripping overburden or

splitting the rock seams to access the

high grade ore they will have advantages

over wheel loaders due to the mass and

crowding force offered by the cable or

hydraulic operated boom system.

The crawler excavator will allow you to strip

benches of material and dump it away or into

waiting trucks below it for transport to a

disposal site or for processing in to valued product.

The haulage volume size and tonnage of the dump trucks,

and the clearance at the dump bodies top edge will determine

the frame size of excavator you choos as the excavator operator

must be able to seee inside the dump box of the end dump truck to

properly load it and level the loads.

Depending upon the size of the excavator it will be

a.diesel with hydraulic drive and hydraulic controls

b. diesel with electric drive

c. electric with trailing cable and all electric wire rope winch drum drive

d. electric with trailing cable and all hydraulic drive components

and hoisting mechanisms.

What you need to do is work backwards Davor, you have to match the

crawler excavator tot he haul truck size and dump box lip height edge

and then examine your options as to its limitations and flexibility for

the following reasons.

The crawler excavator will or may have:

1. a front shovel dipper with wire rope cable drive

and a bottom dump shovel bucket

2. a front shovel dipper with hydraulic crowd and lift and

a bottom dump shovel bucket.

a. a crawler excavator with a backhoe configured bucket

and boom with a an upper boom, lower dipper boom and back hoe

mount bucket.

a1. using diesel hydraulic drive

a2. all electric drive for final hydraulic drive and power unit

using a trailing cable.

3. a dragline operated all electric crawler excavator

Well, in our quarry, overburden are humus, clay and dolomitic sand. Some parts of querry have crack family filled with clay. Humus and loose parts are cuting with buldozers, and rest of overburden is blasting. We have five benches and blasting field are small (maxmimum 15 blastholes, average 10 blastholes). Production is maximum 7500 cubic metars per blasting. That is two blasting per week in a different benches. According that, crawler excavators will dirve frequently up and down.

That is a problem for crawlers, isn't it?

Beside that, we have one querry in wich we do tehnical and biological recovery. Well, half of this querry is build in tortonian strata (loose material), and second half is limestone. We must cut one bench to split tortonian deposits from limestone because of stability. First, I thought that we can use buldozer and blasthole drilling crawler but if crawler excevator can repalce this two machines..

I think that crawler excevators have optimal use with large production (raw material or overburden) in same places when they don't have to move frequently.

Hello Davor,

Before you go any further with your search, you should plan on a visit to The State of Wyoming U.S.A., as you will see a large variation in excavator use for overburden and valued ore recovery.

I would also suggest a Visit to The States of Nevada and Arizona for the same purpose to visit the

strip mines in these states.

I would strongly suggest you do this long before you begin any discussions with the major suppliers only to avoid any issues of clouding your judgement with regard to them.

If you decide to visit you should contact the governors office from each of the the states listed

on your companies official letter head using certified mailings and follow up with a phone call to the office of the governor in each state and ask for someone that can provide you with a tour to these mines as you want visit the various strip mines without any influence from a sales person.

It may be much faster to contact the American Embassy in your country to find the direct contact person in the 3 states above to find the right people faster as you will be spending several days traveling and visiting by motorcar or rail.
