Pipe Conveyor

Pipe conveyor has bee becoming gradually popular for cross country material handling. But for cases where frequent multiple loading at an interspace say 6m is involved I would like to know how far this system will be suitable. I am thinking about designing PFA handling plant from ESP hopper bottom collecting ash from there and ultimately loading to a common silo, Is it possible with a pipe conveyor. Is there any reference of such installation anywhere?

Dear Shri Debashish,

Loading into pipe conveyor can only be done when the belt is open and in trough shape. If you have closely spaced multiple feed points, you have to keep the belt in trough shape in such zone, and thereafter it can be in pipe form.

If you have widely spaced multiple feed points, you can have option to open and close the belt at each point. This will depend on the spacing of your feed points and minimum distance required to change the belt shape from trough to pipe and vice versa.

Pipe conveyor prevents / minimises the escape (flying away) of material when the same is in powdery form.

dear Mr Mulani ,

My main concern in this aspect is the feeding of Fly ash into the pipe conveyor which I am very much apprehensive about.Definitely it can not be fed in open troughed conveyor without having enormous pollution in the ESP area. I would be happy if some installation is referred to.

Dear Shri Debashish,

NTPC-Dadri has extensive belt conveyor system for handling of fly ash by trough conveyors. I was involved in this project, but do not remember exact details now. Possibly, they are “conditioning” the fly ash by adding some moisture. You may refer to them or visit their installation for specific information. They have many belt conveyors, many transfer points including stackers and reclaimers, with 1600 mm belt conveyor system. So, loading the fly ash for one pipe conveyor may not be difficult, by using appropriate method / equipment.

Hello,

I suggest you contact the KOCH Group. They have lot of Pipe Conveyor installations conveying fly ash. Their homepage is:

www.kochtrans.de . Try to contact Josef Staribacher - he is the Pipe Conveyor Guru.

Dear Shri Debashish,

As Mr. Mulani has pointed out, pipe conveyors can only accept material by being opened.

You can contain spillage and dust contamination by appropriate chute design and by "sealing" the edges with a UHMW shrould that the belt edges run in. Air displacement will be disipated by the free space in the pipe conveyor itself, as long as the load points are not too close together.

As "Heinlo" has stated, contacting KOCH is a good starting point that can save you a lot of grief.

Pipe Conveyor For Fly Ash

Posted on 2. Apr. 2004 - 11:32

Dear Shri Debashisde

with more than 160 Pipe Conveyor installations worldwide KOCH is the market leader for Pipe Conveyor technology. We have installed 40 Pipe Conveyors for ash handling, because this is a very good application for the curve going and dust free transportation of difficult bulk materials. Most power plants have several blocks where the Pipe Conveyor collects the ashes. So multiple intermediate loading stations are used frequently in our installations. The belt is opened and closed only a bit within some meters to give enough space for the specially designed feeding device developed by KOCH.

If you have detailed questions, please contact me directly. I can give you several reference facilities.

Pipe Conveyor For Ash Handling

Dear Shri Debashisde

Pipe conveyor Collecting ash from various Esp hoppers may not be feasible due to following reasons

1.0 After Esp Hopper ash is hot and it is not advisable to convey hot material in pipe conveyor as conveyor beeing closed heat radiation is less and after some time even Super Hr grade belt damages. This problem is faced in one of cement plant pipe conveyor where hot cement is conveyed

2.0 horrozontal curves in pipe conveyor can not be so tight that they can take material from various ESP hoppers /economiser hoppers.

In NTPC Dadri also conveying system is after ash collecting silo.

Pipe conveyors can effectivly provided after Ash Silo and in my openion will be much cost effective compared to existing conventional wet based systems.

i am with the suggestions of mr. singh,in india i know what will hapen in the end, in most of the cases, they will cut the esp hopper from the side, put a 4" pipe with valve and start fillig up big bags(second hand purchased from the market),ther are very few people/clients who will be willing to invest for fly ash, which is available free of cost.most of the clients fist wants to make profit then will think of a logical system.there are so many clients who are really thinking to go for a logical system because of its good price between 90-100 us $ /t in gulf market
