Significant Upgrade of Russian Bulk Handling Port by ThyssenKrupp Fördertechnik

Increasing demand on the world coal market is pushing to increase the Russian annual coal production. In order to handle this increased coal demand in the ports, all major coal producers are investing in the infrastructure of their port handling facilities.

One of these ports is Posjet Port, located in the very far east of Russia, close to the Chinese and North Korean border. From this location one of the important players on the coal market, Mechel Group, is handling their bulk coal shipment to Japan, Korea and South East Asia.

To increase their competitiveness in the market, Mechel Group is investing heavily in the upgrade of Posjet Port. ThyssenKrupp Fördertechnik was selected by Mechel Group to supply all necessary bulk material handling equipment for the upgrade of the port.

The scope of work comprises delivery of railcar unloading facility (two side tipplers) unloading simultaneously two railcar wagons, one transfer car, two bucket-wheel stacker/reclaimers, one shiploader, crushing- and a complete conveying system, including all galleries, transfer towers and conveyor bridges.

In order to reduce the difficulties of unloading coal in winter, Mechel has added a defrosting tunnel, equipped with special heating devices.

To protect the environment, special requirements had to be taken into consideration when designing and configuring the handling system, in particular for environmental protection against dust and noise emission.

The handling capacity of the equipment is designed for 3,000 tons/hour and an overall handling capacity of 7 Mio. tons per year.

Considering the fact that the present handling capacity is between 2 to 3 Mio. tons per year, the expansion of the port increases the handling capacity by more than 1.5 times.

The equipment to be supplied by ThyssenKrupp Fördertechnik will represent state-of-the-art in operational safety and handling efficiency.

As ThyssenKrupp Fördertechnik, as one of the few suppliers in the world, covers the complete production program of the bulk materials handling sector, the complete handling facilities of the port system will be based on ThyssenKrupp Fördertechnik’s own know how. Therefore the client can rely on a tailor-made system coming from one source.

The coal handling terminal at Posjet is scheduled to operate with the increased handling capacity around mid of 2010.

In addition the handling system will contribute to create new jobs and secure existing jobs in the region around Posjet. Posjet itself is a settlement of only 3000 people.
