Vibrating Conveyor (feeder)

For a school graduate project a have been asked to design a vibrating conveyor or feeder. It has to be a low cost machine.

The trough:

lenght = 2500mm

width= 600mm

depth=175mm

Frequency= 20 Hz

Amplitude= 5mm (stroke=10mm)

I prefer a un-balanced type, sow the costs can be kept low.

The trough wil be supported by fiberglas re-inforced leaf springs.

Repetitive starts & stops are required because conveyor feeds a packing machine or weigher.

Mass of empty trough=100 kg

Mass of matrial on trough=60kg

Mass from material in storage bin wich supports on conveyor is 200kg. Thus totall mass is 360kg

I have the following questions:

Should it be a brute-force or a natural frequency conveyor??

What kind of drive sytem should i take? maybe a eccentric crank arm?

How can i calculate the exciting force or drive force to move the through?

I hope that someone can help me!

in advance thanks!

kind regards

Harm (The Netherlands)

Dear Mr. Harm,

You intend to design vibrating conveyor. Therefore, eccentric and connecting rod used in a reciprocating feeder is not within your purview.

So, only method is to have unbalanced rotating mass attached to the trough. You have to calculate the amplitude and frequency of vibration in accordance with the rotating mass with respect to mass of trough and material. The system rotates on common center of gravity point like earth-moon system. This is for general understanding of the working of such system. This will enable you to decide the amplitude, and frequency will be according to the rotational speed. You have to also account for the effect of spring.

Dear I G Mulani,

thank you for your reply.

As i recover from your answer, it should be a natural frequency vibrating conveyor/feeder with unbalanced rotating mass.

What is the reason the exciter with cank arm does not qualify?

Could a conveyor with unbalanced rotating mass repetitive start & stop?,

Dear Mr. Harm

Eccentric disc and arm, which I have referred not required by you, is a rotary arm or eccentric mounted on a separate shaft and from there, there is a connecting rod, which imparts reciprocating motion to the tray. This should not be confused with rotary unbalanced mass, which can have different shapes.
